Caption: Dr. Brendan Lee, chair and professor of molecular and human genetics and Robert and Janice McNair Endowed Chair in Molecular and Human Genetics, received the 2022 William F. Neuman Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. The award recognizes outstanding and major scientific contributions in bone and mineral research and contributions to associates and trainees in teaching, research and administration. The award was presented during the ASBMR 2022 annual meeting in Austin last weekend.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Caridad "Cary" Martinez, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology and medical director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, recently was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Cord Blood Association. CBA is an international, nonprofit organization that promotes both public and family cord blood banking with the objectives of saving lives, improving health and changing medicine.

Dr. Peter J. Hotez, professor of pediatrics – molecular virology and microbiology and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, was published in a special COVID-19 section in Science centered on the virus's effect on children. Hotez wrote on the importance of vaccinating children against the virus.

Flu shots: Baylor employees, trainees and students can receive a flu shot on campus starting Sept. 26. You must reserve a time slot in advance through the BCM Flu Vaccine app. Check the app regularly for new dates and locations for flu shots. The flu vaccine is required by Baylor policy; you must get the shot and complete attestation, or submit an exemption request, by Nov. 30, also using the Flu Vaccine app. Other options to get the flu vaccine include:

Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship: Celebrate your colleagues and trainees at noon Sept. 15 in Rayzor Lounge for the 2022 Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship, featuring scholarly projects by faculty, staff, students and trainees. The event is sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.

SlicerDicer and i2b2: SlicerDicer and i2b2 sessions will be held virtually at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 and Sept. 23. Sessions are worth one CME credit. SlicerDicer Self Service Data Query & Analytics Tools will be Sept. 16; i2b2 Self Service Data Query & Analytics Tools will be Sept. 23. Participants will learn to use both systems and databases to generate predictive, prescriptive data and research cohorts; improve core datasets with derived and additional data; identify strategies to refine searches, examine trends and drill down to line-level details.

Long-Read Sequencing Seminar: The Human Genome Sequencing Center will have its sixth long-read sequencing seminar at 10 a.m. Sept. 23. The virtual seminar will showcase applications of long-read sequencing technologies in diverse research areas. This seminar will be focused on Pacific Biosciences. Speakers will include Drs. Harsha Doddapaneni, Justin Zook, Tychele Turner, Christopher M. Grochowski, Michael Eberle and Jonas Korlach. Register for the free seminar.

McNair Symposium: The 10th annual McNair Symposium will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 in Room N315 in the Alkek Building. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Michelle Monje, professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford Medicine. Monje, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, will present "Synaptic integration of brain cancer into neural circuits: new frontiers for neuromodulation." The poster session for McNair Scholar labs and McNair M.D./Ph.D. Scholars will be at 9 a.m. in Alkek Lobby. Register here.

Breast Cancer Awareness 5K: The annual Susan G. Komen Houston Race for the Cure will be at 8 a.m. Oct. 1. The 5K race begins at Sam Houston Park downtown. Join the Baylor College of Medicine team and donate to breast cancer research here.

Career Advancement Series: The Career Advancement Series for early career and mid-career faculty is open for applications. Engage with peers and experienced Baylor faculty to develop skills and competencies that support your goals for advancement and leadership development. Several advancement tracks are available including Instructor Group, Assistant Professor Group, Associate Professor Group, Assistant/Associate Professor Minority Faculty Group and Assistant/Associate Professor Women Faculty Group. Patient Care Awards Workshop: On Sept. 29, learn tips and strategies for preparing a clinical portfolio as an introduction to the Patient Care Clinical Awards. Two virtual sessions are available from noon to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. To register, email Debbie Fernandez at faced@bcm.edu.
