Harris Health Kudos: The Lown Institute Hospitals Index has named Baylor College of Medicine affiliate Harris Health System among the best hospitals in the nation. Out of nearly 3,300 U.S. hospitals evaluated, Harris Health ranks No. 1 in the nation for Civic Leadership, reflecting commitment to equity, inclusion and community health, and first nationally for Community Benefit, based on charity care and other community benefit spending. It ranks No. 23 among Top Hospitals in the nation, the fifth best showing of Texas hospitals ranked.

Faculty Kudos

Dan Riconda, associate professor of molecular & human genetics and director of the Genetic Counseling degree program, has accepted a four-year term on the Standards Committee of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling. The committee develops and maintains standards for educational and clinical training of genetic counseling students and implements a peer-review process to evaluate programs.

Dr. Lynn Zechiedrich, professor and Kyle and Josephine Morrow Chair in Molecular Virology & Microbiology, is featured in a United Nations Foundation music video in support of its COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization. A classically trained flutist, she joined 170 musicians from six continents to perform “I’m Standing with You.” See the video in BCM Family.

Cancer Round Table: CHI St. Luke’s Health presents an International Virtual Round Table with Dr. George Van Buren II, associate professor of surgery and faculty senator, discussing the management of GI and pancreatic cancer with Dr. Benjamin Musher, associate professor of medicine – hematology & oncology, at 5 p.m. today, July 9, on YouTube.

Microbiome for Mars: The Translational Research Institute for Space Health and the California Institute of Technology sponsor a one-day virtual workshop exploring the connection between the microbiome, healthcare and the future of long-duration human space flight starting at 10 a.m. Monday, July 13. The workshop is free and open to the public. See the TRISH website for the agenda.

Blood Donations: Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center hosts an appointment-only blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, in the BCM Gym, 8th floor of Garage 6, main Baylor. Please schedule your time online (sponsor code 4402) or contact Lauren Warren. You also can find a mobile donation site near you online.

Anti-Racism Series: The Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity hosts "So You Think You Can Be Anti-Racist?" a five-part series on systemic racism and injustice. Part 1, "So You Think You're an Ally - Learning How to Be Better," is set for 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, via Zoom. Register to attend.

Education Workshop: The Office of Faculty Development leads a workshop on “E-rounds, an educational innovation, lessons learned” at noon Thursday, July 30. RSVP to attend via Zoom.

Call for Abstracts: The Academy of Distinguished Educators invites you to submit your educational scholarship abstract to the virtual Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship by Aug. 3. See the academy’s website for guidelines; the event is set for Sept. 18.

Device Grants: The Southwest Pediatric Device Innovation Consortium announces a grant opportunity to support pediatric medical device innovators who are able to use their technology to aid in the current COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on children. It seeks novel device solutions to address the coronavirus and other critical emerging public health needs for pediatric patients. Applications are due Aug. 5. Brody Bioethics Award: Nominations are now being accepted for the 2020-2021 Baruch A. Brody Award & Lecture in Bioethics. The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Houston Methodist and the Rice University Department of Philosophy sponsor this international $10,000 award and named lectureship in memory of the Center's founding director. Nominations are due Aug. 7. More nomination information can be found online.

Renal ACD: The School of Medicine seeks an associate course director for the MS2 Renal course. At this time, the course is scheduled in Term 1, during September. It provides an introduction to clinical nephrology: specifically, the diagnosis, treatment, and management of abnormalities in electrolytes and acid base, glomerulonephritis, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease in adults and children. The position comes with 10% FTE support. See Faculty Opportunities for more information.

PA Preceptors: The Baylor Physician Assistant Program, which is ranked third in the nation, seeks primary care providers to serve as preceptors for students during two-week rotations throughout the year. Preceptors in pediatrics, family medicine, outpatient internal medicine, psychiatry and obstetrics & gynecology practices are needed. You need not commit to specific dates at this time. Helping to prepare PA students for their future careers is a great way to ensure exceptional students are ready to take positions in your practice or those of your colleagues.
