While medication is sometimes a must for those living with joint pain, Baylor doctors say some people might find additional relief in the kitchen. Dr. Shalini Jha, assistant professor of medicine – immunology, allergy and rheumatology, says there are some diet changes that have been shown to help lessen inflammation, but the right recipe could be slightly different for each person.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Rachel Davis, associate professor of anesthesiology and health professions and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program-Nurse Anesthesia, has been elected to serve a three-year term as an educator director on the board of directors for the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. Davis will begin her term in October 2022.

Dr. Livia S. Eberlin, director of translational and innovations research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, has been chosen to serve as a member of the Enabling Bioanalytical and Imaging Technologies Study Section, Interdisciplinary Molecular Sciences and Training Integrated Review Group in the Center for Scientific Review of the NIH.

image Dr. Philip Lupo, professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, and Dr. Kim Raghubar, assistant professor of pediatrics – psychology, were awarded a $3.1M R01 from National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute to examine the relative contribution of clinical, socioeconomic, cultural and biological variability in explaining neurocognitive disparities in pediatric leukemia survivors.

Dr. Todd A. Reinhart has started his role as dean of the School of Health Professions at Baylor College of Medicine. He will oversee the School's four programs: Physician Assistant, Doctor of Nursing Practice – Nurse Anesthesia, Orthotics and Prosthetics and Genetic Counseling.

Sunil Singhal, chief of digital pathology transformation in pathology and immunology, delivered a speech and hosted a roundtable at the 8th annual Digital Pathology and Artificial Intelligence Congress: USA in June. The roundtable discussion was on "Implementing Digital Pathology System for Primary Diagnosis." Singhal was the track chair for keynote addresses for "Computational Pathology & A.I."

Dr. Mark Zobeck, instructor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, was recently awarded a Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) for his abstract, "Accurately Forecasting Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Patient Volumes at Treatment Centers in Sub-Saharan Africa." He will present his research at the annual Congress, held in Barcelona, Spain, Sept. 28-Oct. 1.

OMG Lecture: On July 12, Dr. Wei Yang, an NIH distinguished investigator of DNA repair, replication and recombination in molecular biology, will deliver an OMG lecture on "The Ins-and-Outs of V(D)J Recombination." The virtual talk will be at 4 p.m. Register here.

Research Investigator Spring Learning Series: Baylor's Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC) will host the final lecture in the Research Investigator Spring Learning Series on Engagement, Communication and Education at noon July 20. Dr. Mina Silberberg from Duke Global Health Institute will deliver a lecture, "Value and impact of community-engaged approaches – from local to global perspectives." Faculty Opportunities

PPS Facilitator: The School of Medicine is recruiting for a Patient, Physician & Society (PPS) I/II Faculty Facilitator for academic year 2022-23. PPS I/II is Baylor's foundational doctoring course that teaches basic communication, history and physical exam skills. This is a great opportunity to impact students in their earliest clinical education and is a substantive addition to the CV. This is a 0.1 FTE-supported position. Interested faculty should submit a one-page statement of interest, their CV and a letter of support from their department chair to Ebony.Washington@bcm.edu by July 15. MSTP associate director: The Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D. Program) is seeking applications for an associate director. Applications are sought from full-time faculty members to fill one associate director position (to reach a total of three associate directors). The newly appointed associate director will play an essential role in overseeing the MSTP along with two co-directors, Drs. Katherine King and Benjamin Frankfort, two other associate directors, and three full-time administrative staff. Faculty should submit a one-page summary of experience with physician-scientist training and their reasons for interest. Please provide this summary, along with your current CV, and apply here.
