Beeton receives arthritis grant

Dr. Christine BeetonDr. Christine Beeton, associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics, received a three-year, $386,587 grant from the Arthritis Foundation’s Delivering on Discovery program to find a faster cure for the disease. The grant will support her research project titled “Targeting KC1.1 channels in synoviocytes for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.”

Peacock earns training grant

Dr. Cynthia PeacockDr. Cynthia Peacock, associate professor of medicine and head of Baylor’s Transition Medicine Clinic, was awarded an EHF Small Grant from the Episcopal Health Foundation to implement the Practice Without Pressure training curriculum. This curriculum trains healthcare professionals and families to provide medical care to an individual with an intellectual disability in a way that the patient is comfortable.

BCM BeWell 2015 review and 2016 preview

BCM BeWell coordinator Jesse Gavin will present at various campus locations an overview of 2015 wellness activities and a preview of what 2016 has in store for wellness participants. Topics will include the 2015 BCM health report card, year-end survey information and upcoming wellness events. The presentations will be held throughout January; see the full schedule and locations online. Eligible employees who attend will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Translational research symposium Jan. 15

The eighth annual Symposium on Translational Research hosted by the M.D./Ph.D. programs of Baylor, UT Health and the MD Anderson Cancer Center will be held Friday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Onstead Auditorium of MD Anderson’s Mitchell Building. Speakers are Dr. James Versalovic, professor of pathology & immunology, on “The Gastrointestinal Microbiome and Metagenomic Medicine,” and Dr. David Piwnica-Worms of MD Anderson, on “Of Mice and Men: Mapping the Landscape of Murine Models in Molecule Imaging.” The symposium is funded by a grant from the Cullen Trust for Higher Education.

The You FIRST program invites Baylor faculty and staff to “An Affair to Remember,” a casino-themed celebration scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road, Houston, 77045. The event will include food, music and great prizes, as well as the opportunity to interact with your team members and meet and celebrate with new colleagues.
