Awards and Recognitions
Thakkar honored as leading gastroenterologist
Dr. Kalpesh H. Thakkar, assistant professor of pediatrics – gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, has been included in this year's Becker's ASC Review list, "125 leading Gastroenterologists in America." The list recognizes outstanding doctors in health care organizations across the country. Physicians were selected for the list based on the awards they receive from major organizations in the field, their leadership in these organizations, work on professional publications and positions of service.
Dr. Joseph S. Coselli, professor and chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, and Dr. Scott LeMaire, professor and director of research in the division of cardiothoracic surgery, were awarded the 2011 St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Distinguished Scientist Award Dec.19, by Dr. Herbert L. Dupont, chief of internal medicine at SLEH.
Munoz honored for essay
Dr. Alvaro Munoz, instructor in the Scott Department of Urology, won second place in the Beaumont Health System's Jack Lapides Essay Contest on Urodynamic and Neurourology Research. Open to all urology interns, residents, fellows or urologists in academic or clinical practice worldwide, the contest recognizes individuals or groups doing outstanding work in the field.
Munoz's essay focused on evaluating a specific P2X3/P2X2/3 purinergic receptor antagonist on modulating nerve activity in the spinal cord from rats with neurogenic overactive bladder after chronic spinal cord injury. Munoz collaborated on the study with Dr. George Somogyi and Dr. Christopher Smith at BCM and Dr. Timothy Boone of The Methodist Hospital System.
Munoz received a $1,000 honorarium and plaque to commemorate the award, which will be presented during the American Urological Association annual meeting in Atlanta May 19, 2012.
The seminar series at the Children's Nutrition Research Center will feature the following speakers in January:
- Jan. 5, Dr. Loning Fu, assistant professor of pediatrics – nutrition, "Circadian Homeostasis of Leptin Expression and Signaling Maintains Energy Homeostasis in vivo"
- Jan. 12, Dr. Qiang Tong, assistant professor of pediatrics, "The Regulation of Muscle Insulin Signaling by SIRT2."
- Jan. 19, Dr. Karim El Kasmi, assistant professor of pediatrics – gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, University of Colorado at Denver School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus, "A novel mouse model of parenteral nutrition associated liver injury." Hosted by Dr. Doug Burrin, professor of pediatrics – nutrition at BCM.
- Jan. 26, Dr. Marta Fiorotto, associate professor of pediatrics, "Developmental Determinants of Skeletal Muscle Growth Capacity."
All talks are from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. in Howland Auditorium, CNRC, 1100 Bates St.
U.S. Army Capt. Robbin Riggs, a former nurse in the Ben Taub General Hospital emergency room, recently presented an American flag to Dr. Kenneth Mattox, professor of surgery at BCM and chief of staff at Ben Taub, and the Ben Taub medical team. The flag was flown over Shindad Airbase, Afghanistan, on Sept. 11, 2011, in the face of enemy hostility. It will be prominently displayed in Ben Taub General Hospital.
