Mamonkin earns hematology scholar award

Dr. Maksim Mamonkin, a postdoctoral research associate in the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, has received a 2016 Scholar Award from the American Society of Hematology. The awards provide financial support to fellows and junior faculty dedicated to careers in hematology research as they transition from training programs to independent investigators. As a basic research fellow, he will receive $100,000 over a two- to three-year period.

Petersen honored by Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce

Dr. Laura PetersenDr. Laura Petersen, associate professor of medicine - health services research, was honored at the Greater Houston Women's Hall of Fame Gala Dec. 10 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The event, sponsored by the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce, honors outstanding women in the Greater Houston area who have contributed significantly to the advancement of women and improved the quality of life for future generations of Houstonians.

Students win at TIRR symposium

Baylor graduate students Ilirjana Hyseni and Yu-Mei Huang were recognized for outstanding research for spinal cord and traumatic brain injury at the annual TIRR Foundation Mission Connect Scientific Symposium, held last week at the Cooley Life Center at UTHouston. The judged competition offers valuable feedback about research on the future treatment and understanding of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.

Jingle Bell Run

There is still time to join the Baylor team for the annual Jingle Bell Run & Walk benefitting the downtown YMCA. The event is Sunday, Dec. 13, starting at noon, and Baylor Sports Medicine is the medical sponsor. Join the team by registering online (select “Corp Team” and then search for BCM Reindeer Runners). Participants will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Market Days Dec. 16

Market Days at BCM will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge in the main Baylor building. Vendors including Brenham Kitchens, Chocolate and Sweetness, Gold Leaf Coffee, Kristi’s Kitchen, Little Delectables, Mulberry Muse and Revolucion Juice. The student group CHEF Market also will bring in fresh produce from Central City Co-op. Submit pre-orders online for fresh fruit and veggies by Sunday, Dec. 13 in order to pick up produce at Market Days.

You FIRST celebration Jan. 21

The You FIRST program invites Baylor faculty and staff to “An Affair to Remember,” a casino-themed celebration scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road, Houston, 77045. The event will include food, music and great prizes, as well as the opportunity to interact with your team members and meet and celebrate with new colleagues.
