Coronavirus Information

Vaccine Clinic site visit

The Baylor Medicine Vaccine Clinic underwent a COVID-19 Vaccination Program Provider Site Visit on Nov. 18, meeting all CDC and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommendations and requirements for a COVID-19 vaccine provider. The clinic was recognized for having an inventory system with checks and balances that ensure no errors and for its knowledgeable staff. The clinic is led by Lisa Icard, director of nursing, and run by quality nurses Angela Sterling and Tera Skeen and clinic nurse Jennifer Johnson.

Happy Hanukkah!

For the fifth year, the Aishel House in the Texas Medical Center has placed a Menorah in front of Baylor's Jewish Institute for Medical Research, and Rabbi Eliezer Lazaroff and his staff light the Menorah each night of Hanukkah. Thank you to the Aishel House, and Happy Hanukkah!

Veggie study participants needed

Adults in good health, age 18 to 65 years, are needed for a study to see if a rapid, optical skin test can measure how many servings of fruits and vegetables participants consume. Participants will consume 6 or 12 ounces of a provided juice daily for 6 weeks and must commit to three 90-minute visits for height, weight, body fat, and optical skin measurements, blood draw and food surveys. Join the School of Health Professions virtually for two upcoming events. The school's Awards Ceremony is today at 12:30 and its 2021 Commencement is Sunday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. Watch both by livestream. Congratulations to the School of Health Professions 2021 graduates!

Docappella performance

The Baylor community is invited to a performance by Docappella, BCM's student a cappella group, today, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The event is free; masks are required.

Quality improvement course

Applications are open through Dec. 5 for the spring 2022 Leading Healthcare Improvement Course. This advanced-level quality improvement training course for clinicians and health professionals is eligible for CME credit, and it is offered at no cost, although space is limited. Blood drive

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive Wednesday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., in main Baylor's Rayzor Lounge. Donors get a COVID antibody test and a T-shirt. Schedule online.

CVRI talk on heart failure

The Cardiovascular Research Institute presents a talk in its Fall Seminar Series on "Cardiac Maturation: Novel Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications in Heart Failure," by Dr. Yibin Wang, a BCM alumnus now with the University of California, Dec. 8, at noon. Register online.

Autism webinar: sleep strategies

Awards and Recognitions

Bozkurt named as journal editor

Dr. Biykem BozkurtDr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine, has been named the next editor-in-chief of JACC: Heart Failure. Bozkurt, an advanced heart failure specialist, previously served as one of the heart failure section editors for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and is a past chair of the American College of Cardiology's Heart Failure and Transplant Member Section and Leadership Council.

Chumpitazi to help build pediatric pandemic network

Dr. Corrie ChumpitaziDr. Corrie Chumpitazi, associate professor of pediatrics – emergency medicine, serves as site PI for a $48 million Health Resources and Services Administration grant to establish a Regional Pediatric Pandemic Network that will support the planning and preparation of child healthcare facilities to respond to global health threats, including pandemics, and support communities in everyday pediatric readiness. BCM's Center for Collaborative and Interactive Technologies, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Fordis, hosts the web-based platform for this network. Chumpitazi will co-lead the Knowledge Education and Communication efforts and Dr. Brent Kaziny, assistant professor of pediatrics, will co-lead the Capacity & Capability and Reunification areas. Davis named ASN fellow

Dr. Teresa DavisDr. Teresa Davis, professor of pediatrics – nutrition, was recognized as an American Society for Nutrition Fellow at the society's annual meeting. The Fellow award is the highest honor that the society bestows and recognizes scientists who have had distinguished careers in the field of nutrition. Davis is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Nutrition and a past-president of ASN.

BCM honored by Alzheimer's association

Baylor was awarded the 2021 Leadership Award from the Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, accepted by Dr. Mark Kunik and colleagues. This year, the College registered the largest Walk to End Alzheimer's group with 28 teams and 385 walkers, raising more than $81,000 for the organization. BCM and the Houston Alzheimer's Association are partnering in the US POINTER study, as the sole Texas research site. BCM has received nearly $5 million in Alzheimer's and dementia research grants from the Alzheimer's Association since 1996.
