College News Hermann Park volunteer day 
Baylor employees and students volunteered at Hermann Park on Friday, Nov. 18, helping to clear and improve wooded portions of the park. Look for more volunteer opportunities for the Baylor community coming in 2023, offering benefits-eligible employees the chance to use their Volunteer Time Off. Toy and gift drive Baylor is hosting a holiday toy and gift drive through Dec. 14 benefiting BEAR Houston, a nonprofit organization that supports abused and neglected children. New, unwrapped toys and gifts for children and adolescents, newborn to age 17, will be accepted. For a list of acceptable toy and gift suggestions, please visit the BEAR Houston website. Holiday giving When planning your holiday gift-giving, consider donating to Baylor in honor of a friend or loved one. This unique, meaningful holiday gift will support College initiatives in education, discovery and patient care, and when you give, you'll receive a package of holiday inserts that you can include along with your own holiday cards to let your friends and family know a gift was made on their behalf. Support Baylor at participating Chevrons Baylor is partnering with select Chevron stations in Texas to support pediatric/adolescent brain cancer research. Now through the middle of December, when you use Baylor-branded gas pumps at participating Chevron stations, 5 cents of every gallon purchased benefits Baylor's research that leads to better patient care. HR news 2023 Premium Reduction Deadline: Employees who are enrolled in individual only coverage will need to earn 10,000 BCM BeWell points by 11:59 p.m., Dec. 15 to receive 20% off their employee only medical premiums in 2023. Employees who have a spouse or domestic partner enrolled in a BCM medical plan option will need to earn 15,000 BCM BeWell points by 11:59 p.m., Dec. 15 to receive 10% off their employee plus spouse or domestic partner medical premiums in 2023. Long COVID forum Baylor will host its Long COVID Syndrome Forum, a free virtual event featuring faculty involved in the Post-COVID Care Clinic and long COVID research, Dec. 10, 8 a.m. - noon. They will speak about their experiences and lessons learned during the pandemic. Topics will include strategies for identifying and managing post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS), defining care models for long COVID patients and research on understanding the mechanisms of long COVID. Update on Alzheimer's talk The 2022 Update on Alzheimer’s Disease lecture will be held Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. as a virtual presentation co-hosted by Baylor and the Alzheimer’s Association Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter. It is free and open to the public. Dr. Melissa Yu, professor and director of the Alzheimer's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Baylor, will discuss the basics of Alzheimer's disease, including symptoms, diagnosis and current and promising new treatments. Dr. Chi-Ying (Roy) Lin, assistant professor of neurology, will discuss how to navigate the holidays as you live with or care for someone with dementia. To register, click here. Register for Clinical Research Methods course The Department of Family and Community Medicine will offer the Clinical Research Methods beginner's course in January, aiming to train health professionals how to analyze data using SAS. Family medicine scholarship: Rebecca Chen was selected as a 2023 STFM Foundation Student Scholarship recipient from the Medical Student Education Scholarship Review Committee of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. The honor provides support to attend the 2023 Conference on Medical Student Education in January in New Orleans where she will share a poster presentation. In addition, Chen and fellow Baylor medical student Sarah Heady were two of 10 students selected as 2022 scholars by the Pisacano Leadership Foundation. These scholarships are awarded to medical students who demonstrate strong commitment to the specialty of family medicine.
