Fernbach honored by nurses association

Susan FernbachSusan Fernbach, a registered nurse and director of genetic outreach for the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, was honored at the Texas Nurses Association, District 9, 27th annual Nursing Celebration, held Nov. 9 at the Westin Galleria, for her outstanding contributions to the nursing profession and for her professional educational and community outreach, including the Evenings with Genetics seminar series.

Gardner to lead state surgical skills group

Dr. Aimee GardnerDr. Aimee Gardner, assistant dean in the School of Allied Health Sciences, was named president of the Texas Association of Surgical Skills Laboratories, a state-wide organization that aims to enhance education using simulation-based training for surgical trainees and other learners. With Gardner as president, Baylor will host the association's next annual meeting in September 2018. Gardner also was recently appointed associate editor of BMJ Simulation & Technology Enhanced Education Learning.

Keyes earns lifestyle medicine certification

Dr. Sarah-Ann KeyesDr. Sarah-Ann Keyes, assistant professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences' Physician Assistant Program, has received board certification in the field of lifestyle medicine. She is one of 200-plus physicians and master's level clinicians to be the first-ever to be certified as diplomates of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine/American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine. This field involves the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as diet, physical activity and other non-drug modalities, to prevent, treat and, oftentimes, reverse chronic disease.

Oldham honored internationally for career achievements

Dr. John OldhamDr. John Oldham, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Barbara and Corbin Robertson, Jr. Endowed Chair for Personality Disorders, was inducted as a fellow in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh at a ceremony in Edinburgh, Scotland, earlier this fall. Each year, about 400 physicians from across the world are elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in recognition of their achievements.

Baylor faculty named AAAS Fellows

Dr. Philip HastingsDr. Jeffrey NoebelsDr. Philip Hastings, professor of molecular and human genetics and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Jeffrey L. Noebels, professor of neurology, neuroscience and molecular and human genetics and director of the Blue Bird Circle Developmental Neurogenetics Laboratory, were named 2017 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This prestigious honor is awarded to AAAS members for distinguished work that is deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Read more.

Baylor community members honored by philanthropy group

Baylor board member and former board chair Marc Shapiro was named Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Houston Chapter at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, held Nov. 16 at the Hilton Americas, and Barbara Walker, senior director in the Office of Philanthropy, received the M. Anne Murphy Award for Professional Achievement. In addition, Margaret Alkek Williams, longtime donor to Baylor College of Medicine, earned the Maurice Hirsch Award for Philanthropy.


Dec. 2: Allied Health Commencement

The School of Allied Health Sciences Commencement is Saturday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Grand Hall at Lancaster Center located at 71 Oakdale Street, Houston, Texas 77004. The allied health graduating class includes 16 Doctor of Nursing Practice Program students, 20 Orthotics and Prosthetics Program students and 40 Physician Assistant Program students. Congratulations to all the graduating allied health students!

Dec. 6: DocTalk

DocTalk with Dr. Carlos Galvani, chief of metabolic and bariatric surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, on weight loss surgery will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at noon in Cullen Auditorium. DocTalk is an informal seminar series with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend may receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Dec. 6: TMC Biodesign information session

Join members of the TMC Innovation Institute to learn more about our Biodesign Fellowship program, get details on the recruitment process and ask questions. TMC Biodesign is a one-year innovation fellowship program that unites the talents of innovators with diverse backgrounds to quickly bring breakthrough products to market. Dec. 7: Off Script storytelling event

Hear stories from the Baylor and TMC communities about the impact of Hurricane Harvey at Off Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine, Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Blattner Conference Room in Texas Children's Hospital’s Wallace Tower. Off Script is part of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy’s Narrative Medicine Program.

Nominations open for Robertson Presidential Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education. This college-wide award for faculty educational service is offered for active faculty members who have made stellar and enduring contributions to the educational mission of college. HR news: Use or lose flexible spending account funds

If you are currently participating in a Healthcare and/or Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account Plan and you have funds remaining in your 2017 healthcare or dependent care FSA, you have until Dec. 31, 2017, to incur eligible expenses. Any unused balance will be forfeited (Internal Revenue Service "use it or lose it" rule). To request an FSA reimbursement, complete and submit an FSA claim form to UnitedHealthcare by March 31, 2018, for eligible expenses incurred Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2017.
