Suarez to head neurocritical care network

Dr. Jose SuarezDr. Jose Suarez, professor of neurology at BCM, has been elected first president of the Neurocritical Care Research Network. The network was created during the first annual Neurocritical Care Research Conference. Its goal is to act as a bridge for researchers at different institutions to connect important work to hasten medical advances in treating neurological injuries and resulting disorders. Suarez is also the founder and driving force behind the conference. The next conference is scheduled May 2012 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital.

Kapur honored by emergency medicine group

Dr. Bobby KapurDr. Bobby Kapur, assistant professor of medicine at BCM and associate chief of emergency medicine at Ben Taub General Hospital, has been awarded the Order of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine in recognition of his contributions to the development of emergency medicine. The award will be presented at the 14th International Conference of Emergency Medicine in Dublin, Ireland, next summer. Kapur is also director of BCM’s Center for Globalization.

Arlinghaus honored for work with vets

In recognition of her clinical care and advocacy for veteran patients, Dr. Kimberly Arlinghaus, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at BCM, received the Humility Award at the annual Sierra Tucson “Gratitude for Giving” celebration in Houston Nov. 11. Humility recognition honors a medical or clinical professional who has served as an advocate to others. Sierra Tucson is a treatment center for addictions, mental health issues and pain management.

Duncan Cancer Center Symposium Nov. 29

The NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Cancer Center at BCM will hold its 9th annual symposium Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lectures and poster sessions will be held throughout the day in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor lounge. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Mary Hendrix, president and scientific director of the Children's Memorial Research Center in Chicago. Her talk, “Targeting the Plasticity of Aggressive Tumor Cells,” will begin at 3 p.m.

Other speakers include Dr. Malcolm Brenner, Dr. Sharon Plon, Dr. Bert O'Malley and Dr. Luis Rustveld, who will give presentations on their projects funded through the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

Eller named director of nursing

Melinda Eller, R.N., director of Baylor's Ambulatory Surgery Center, has been named director of nursing for BCM. In this expanded role, Eller will focus on quality and safety initiatives and development of the College's professional nursing staff.
