Baylor named Top Workplace

Baylor College of Medicine was awarded a 2015 Top Workplaces honor by the Houston Chronicle. The award was based on the results of an employee feedback survey. Baylor was ranked No. 27 in the large companies category. Winning companies were featured in a special supplemental section of the Houston Chronicle and online.

Slaughter recognized by Texas Executive Women

Dr. Gayle SlaughterDr. Gayle Slaughter, senior associate dean for graduate education and diversity in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, has been named one of the Women on the Move for 2015 by Texas Executive Women. She and other honorees were recognized at a luncheon Nov. 12 at the Hilton Americas. Slaughter was recognized for her dedication to training the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists. She has developed and currently directs several impactful programs, including the Summer Medical and Research Training program for undergraduate students, the >Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity for graduate students and the IRACDA program, which allows postdoctoral scholars to combine research with teaching at minority-serving institutions in the community. TEW supports programs that recognize, develop and fund the advancement of women and teenage girls in Greater Houston.

Baylor’s Gold Humanism Honor Society recognized

Baylor’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society will receive the Outstanding Community Service Organization Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Houston Chapter on National Philanthropy Day, Nov. 19. Dr. Vandana Shah, assistant professor of medicine and the Baylor GHHS sponsor, will accept the award, made in recognition of the group’s advocacy for compassionate care through service projects focused on underserved patients, veterans and families of critically ill children.

A Life Well Lived: Exercise and Nutrition Nov. 17

Dr. Teresia O’Connor, assistant professor of pediatrics – nutrition, Molly Gee, managing director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center, and Dr. Stephen Sigworth, vice president and chief medical officer, discuss obesity and weight management techniques for children and adults at The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine’s educational luncheon at the Junior League of Houston. Professionalism talks Nov. 17

Dr. Thomas Inui, professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, will give three talks on Nov. 17 as part of the Center for Professionalism in Medicine Profiles in Professionalism Lecture Series. RSVP to ProfessionalismMatters@bcm.edu or by calling 713-798-4553. Talks include:

Brain injuries in veterans focus of talk

Join Dr. Regina McGlinchey, director of the Translational Research Center for Traumatic Brain Injury and Stress Disorders at the Boston VA, on Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m.at the DeBakey VA fourth floor auditorium as she provides insight into the effects of blast exposure and mild traumatic brain injury on the brain and behavior. She will share select findings from the Center’s behavioral assessments and neuroimaging protocol. The Center, which is in its sixth year at the Boston VA and its first year at the Houston VA, focuses on the unique characteristics and experiences of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn veterans and active-duty service members. Market Days at BCM Nov. 18

Stop by Market Days at BCM on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge to pick up local foods for your Thanksgiving feast or grab a snack. Vendors will include Brenham Kitchens, Chocolate and Sweetness, Gold Leaf Coffee, Kristi’s Kitchen, Mulberry Muse and Revolucion Juice. The Baylor student group CHEF (Choosing Healthy, Eating Fresh) also will offer fresh produce from Central City Co-op. Free TMC Library event on WWII

To mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan, the TMC Library, Rice University and the Asia Society will hold a free and open-to-the-public conference Nov. 18-20 to highlight the ongoing cooperative efforts by Japanese and American scientists, historians and archivists to preserve and disseminate this important history. The event will include nationally and internationally renowned speakers, a documentary filmmaker and film and a healing reconciliation service. See the full conference schedule.

Applications open for TMA award

Applications are being accepted for the Texas Medical Association Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine, which recognizes academic physicians who are consummate teachers, role models and medical professionals. The award program has four recognition levels: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The nomination deadline is Nov. 20. Find more information on the awards and application process.

BCM BeWell end of year survey

BCM BeWell strives to create a culture of wellness at Baylor by providing opportunities for employees to be involved in health and wellness in a fun and innovative way through the wellness portal, free biometric screenings, BCM wide and individual challenges and much more. Volunteers needed for RSV research

Did you know that an RSV infection can lead to pneumonia, bronchitis, hospitalization or even death in older adults? Baylor currently is seeking volunteers for a clinical research study of an investigational vaccine that may protect against RSV. To qualify, interested participants must be 60 or older and in general good health. Participants will receive at no cost a study-related physical exam, investigational vaccine or placebo and a seasonal influenza vaccine. Compensation will be provided for time and travel.
