Casal honored by interventional pulmonology group

Dr. Roberto CasaDr. Roberto Casal, assistant professor of medicine and director of interventional pulmonology, received the Geoffrey McLennan Memorial Award for Advances in Interventional Pulmonology from the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology. Casal is the fifth and youngest person to receive this honor, which is awarded to mid-career physicians who are deemed by peers as likely to continue to make important contributions in the field.

Guntupalli recognized by American College of Chest Physicians

Dr. Kalpalatha GuntupalliDr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, professor of medicine, was named Master Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, the highest honor of the organization, in recognition of her exceptional leadership, consistent and enduring contributions to the medical education, clinical practice and advancing the mission of the organization.

Hamilton named chair of research organization

Dr. Susan HamiltonDr. Susan L. Hamilton, professor and chair of molecular physiology and biophysics, was elected chair of the board of trustees for the Gordon Research Conferences for a one-year term. She previously served a one-year term as vice chair. The Gordon Research Conferences promote discussions and the free exchange of ideas for researchers in biological, chemical and physical sciences. In her role, Hamilton will continue to support an environment meant to bring scientists of different disciplines together for collaborative research.

McGuire awarded for prostate cancer research

Dr. Sean McGuire, assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology, was awarded the 2015 John Paulson–Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award to support his research on prostate cancer. In all, 19 different Young Investigator awards were given at the Foundation’s annual scientific retreat. More than 100 applicants applied, but only those with the most promising and impactful research towards fighting the disease were chosen. McGuire’s work characterizing metabolic alterations specific to prostate cancer cells may lead to novel personalized therapies for men with advanced forms of the disease.

DocTalk on flu Nov. 10

DocTalk will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at noon in Cullen Auditorium with Dr. Pedro Piedra, professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology, speaking on “Flu 101: The season, the shot, the scoop.” Basically, all you need to know to prepare for the upcoming flu season! BCM BeWell Vitality Points available for benefits-eligible employees who attend.

Evenings with Genetics Nov. 10

Evenings with Genetics will be held Nov. 10 with Dr. Angus Wilfong, professor of pediatrics and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the Bluebird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology at Texas Children’s Hospital. He will speak on “Seizures and Epilepsy in Children, Advances in Genetics and Treatment.” The event will be held at the Children’s Museum of Houston, 1500 Binz, with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. The seminar is free but registration is required.

Purple Stride for pancreatic cancer Nov. 21

Join Dr. George Van Buren and the rest of the Elkins Pancreas Center team for Purple Stride Houston on Nov. 21 at NRG Park. The 5K run and family-friendly walk supports the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and raises awareness and funds that support research and patients and their loved ones. Register online (click “register,” then “join a team” and select Elkins Pancreas Center at Baylor College of Medicine in the drop-down box).

The Laboratory Safety Training and Radiation Safety Training are now available online through the NetLearning Online Training System. See more information and a link to the online training.

Deadline for many BCM BeWell activities is upcoming

Nov. 24 is the deadline for benefits-eligible employees to complete the 2015 BCM BeWell Biometric Screening for BCM BeWell Vitality points to count toward the 16,000 points goal for the 2016 Medical Premium Reduction. Nov. 30 is the deadline for benefits-eligible employees to complete the 2015 BCM BeWell Biometric Screening and Vitality Health Review to receive a $50 Amazon gift card.
