Awards and Recognitions

Williams to lead mental health program

Dr. Laurel WilliamsDr. Laurel Williams, associate professor of psychiatry at Baylor and chief of psychiatry at Texas Children's Hospital, will lead the Be-Well Be-Connected Program, funded through a $1 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program, in partnership with the City of Houston, will provide care for young people with early onset psychosis and severe bipolar disorder by providing in-home treatment.

Oct. 14: Celebrating a pioneer of mitochondrial genetics

A scientific symposium in honor of Dr. Lee-Jun Wong, professor of molecular and human genetics, will highlight the advances in her field of mitochondrial genetics. It will be held Monday, Oct. 14, from noon - 5 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium.

Oct. 15: Luncheon benefits Teen Health Clinic

The Foundation for Teen Health's Hope for the Future luncheon benefiting the Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic is Tuesday, Oct. 15, 11:30 a.m. at the River Oaks Country Club. The Dr. Peggy Smith Professional Excellence Award will be awarded to Gwen and Ed Emmett and the June and Virgil Waggoner Volunteerism Award will go to Doe Florsheim. Purchase tickets online.

Oct. 16: Info on cochlear implants

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is hosting a free educational session on cochlear implant technology, Oct. 16 at the Baylor Medical Center – McNair Campus, first floor conference rooms. An open house from 2 – 5 p.m. will offer one-on-one communication with cochlear implant manufacturers and current users of the technology, followed by educational seminars from 5 – 7 p.m. with audiologists, physicians and speech language pathologists. Parking will be validated; light snacks provided. Email ears@bcm.edu with questions and to RSVP.

Oct. 18: Lung injury conference

Baylor's second annual Avoiding Lung Injury Conference is Oct. 18, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women. This conference offers strategies for minimizing lung injury and improving respiratory outcomes in the NICU with experts from Baylor and Texas Children's. Register online.

Oct. 19: Primary Care Update conference

Primary Care Update, a one-day conference providing evidence-based information and advice on a variety of clinical topics, including cardiac care, headache diagnosis and management, hypertension and more, is Oct. 19, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Kleberg Auditorium in the main Baylor building. Open to physicians, advanced practice providers and trainees, this conference is presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine and provides 7 hours of CME. Register online.

Oct. 19: Autism Speaks Walk

The Houston Autism Speaks Walk is Saturday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m. at Lynn Eusan Park at the University of Houston. Support autism research, resources and services by joining or donating to the Texas Children's and Baylor team.

PA Week, Carl Fasser awardee announced

PA Week

National PA Week was celebrated this week, Oct. 7 – 10. Thank you to all of Baylor's physician assistants and PA program faculty and leadership for their commitment to patient care and education. This week also marked the announcement of Peggy Walsh, PA-C., as the winner of the School of Health Professions' 2019 Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award, named for Carl Fasser, longtime director of the Baylor Physician Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions, for his leadership in the profession through education, research, clinical practice and service. It is awarded annually to an exceptional Baylor PA or program alumnus. Walsh is a 2010 Baylor graduate who now practices at Children's Hospital Colorado.

Relationship violence awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Baylor is showing support by encouraging all community members to participate in Wear Purple Day on Thursday, Oct. 17, to acknowledge the more than 100 Texans who lose their lives to relationship violence each year. Learn what you can do to help by visiting Baylor's intimate partner violence webpage, AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence), the Houston Area Women's Center and the Texas Council on Family Violence.

Support anti-human trafficking program

Support the Baylor College of Medicine Anti-Human Trafficking Program on Tuesday – Saturday throughout October at OKRA Charity Saloon. OKRA's concept is simple: for each drink or food item purchased, you'll received one ticket to put toward the charity of your choice. The charity with the most tickets at the end of the month receives the month's proceeds. You'll also learn more about the program at its informational booth set up at OKRA. Can't make it in person? You can still donate to the program.

Flu shots on campus

Flu shots continue through the Occupational Health Program. Next week, they'll be available Monday, Oct. 14, at the Jamail Specialty Care Center, room E4-125 on the fourth floor, 2 – 4 p.m. Don't forget to attest online!
