Awards and Recognitions

Todd elected to association leadership

Dr. Robert ToddDr. Rob Todd, chairman and professor in the department of medicine, was recently elected as president-elect of the Association of Professors of Medicine, the national organization of chairs of departments of medicine in the United States and Canada. He will serve as president-elect for one year and will become president of the association in July 2014. Todd will also serve as a member of the board of directors of the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine, of which the APM is a founding member organization.

Buck honored by family physicians group

Dr. David BuckDr. David S. Buck, professor of family and community medicine, was awarded the 2013 Public Health Award by the American Academy of Family Physicians. The award, presented at the AAFP annual meeting in San Diego, recognizes individuals who are making extraordinary contributions to public health issues. Buck serves as president of Healthcare for the Homeless–Houston, which he founded in 1999. More than 10,000 individuals each year are served by HHH through primary care, psychiatric and counseling services, dental care, case management and support services. He also leads the research efforts of HHH and has published a dozen articles related to health policy, HHH’s model programs and systemic issues related to homeless healthcare.

Chan honored through lecture at University of Maryland

Dr. Lawrence ChanDr. Lawrence Chan, director of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center at BCM and chief of the division of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism in the department of medicine, has been invited to give the 39th Mary Shorb Lecture in Nutrition at the University of Maryland Oct. 21. The lecture honors the late Dr. Mary Shorb, a professor of nutrition at the University of Maryland who developed an assay for an essential growth factor that laid the foundation for the discovery, purification and identification of vitamin B12. Every year, a scientist of sterling credentials is invited to give a public lecture on campus focused on the broad area of nutrition and meet with graduate students and faculty.

Annual Graduate Student Symposium Oct. 17

Dr. Deborah JohnsonThe 25th Annual Graduate Research Symposium will be held Thursday, Oct. 17. Posters will be on display in Rayzor Lounge and presentations will be held throughout the day in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Deborah Johnson, dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, will deliver the Joseph L. Melnick Distinguished Guest Lecture from 3 to 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, followed by an awards ceremony and reception. Johnson will speak on "From tRNAs to Cancer: The Road Less Taken."

Docappella to perform Oct. 18

Check out BCM's favorite singing group at "BCM Docappella Presents: Acatoberfest Concert" Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Under the Volcano, 2349 Bissonnet St. The group will debut several new songs at the concert.

Alzheimer's Update

Dr. Rachelle DoodyDr. Rachelle Doody, the Effie Marie Cain Chair in Alzheimer's Disease Research at BCM, will present Update on Alzheimer's Disease, Oct. 21, registration at 6:30 p.m.; program at 7 p.m., at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences, 5555 Hermann Park Dr. The event is supported in part by the Moselle and Milton Pollack Endowed Fund for Alzheimer's Education in the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center at BCM. Doctors for Change talk on access to care

Doctors for Change October general forum "Expanding Access to Care in Texas" will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the University Eye Institute, UH Health and Biomedical Sciences Building on the University of Houston campus. Light dinner and networking begin at 6 p.m., program starts at 6:30 p.m. Texas Rep. College News

Funding available for nutrition education projects

The USDA Center for Collaborative Research on WIC Nutrition Education Innovations at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at BCM (CNRC WIC Center) announces the second round of funding for research that demonstrates creative approaches to nutrition education for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The grants will be funded for up to two years and require a partnership between a university-based researcher and a state or local WIC program. Find more information on the CNRC WIC center website.

Funds available for developmental disabilities research

Funds are available for junior faculty conducting research related to intellectual and developmental disabilities. The award through BCM's Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center will provide money to a junior faculty member who is in the process of applying for an NIH grant. It will be funded at $50,000 which can be used toward salary support for staff, supplies, travel and small equipment. The applications deadline is Oct. 21. Find more information online.

Call for Abstracts: 11th Annual Duncan Cancer Center Symposium

The 11th Annual Dan L Duncan Cancer Center Symposium will be held Nov. 12, providing a forum for basic and clinical researchers to share their work with colleagues within the Texas Medical Center. Abstracts for the symposium are being accepted until Oct. 14 and can be submitted online. Register online for the symposium by Nov. 1 to receive a free lunch. Additional information can be found on the symposium webpage.
