Chang to lead anesthesiology residency

Dr. Lee ChangDr. Lee Chang, associate professor of anesthesiology, has been named residency program director for the department. An outstanding teacher, mentor and member of the department since 2007, he has received numerous awards during his career, including the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the Dean H. Morrow Outstanding Resident Mentor Award, both of which are selected by the residents.

Blood drive

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host an appointment-only blood drive Tuesday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the BCM Gym, 8th floor of garage 6, main Baylor. Schedule online.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Showcase: Taking applications

Academic and research programs, departments and administrative offices, and student and trainee organizations have the opportunity to highlight their activities to address diversity, equity and inclusion at a College-wide showcase in October. Learn more and complete an application to participate by Sept. 23.

Reducing stress and fostering resilience in medicine

The Center for Professionalism speaker series will offer a talk on "An Experiential Introduction to Mind-Body Medicine Skills to Reduce Stress and Foster Resilience and Well-Being," Thursday, Sept. 24, 4 – 5 p.m., via Zoom; Meeting ID: 966 0293 5739; Passcode: 942715. The discussion will be presented by Dr. Aviad Haramati, professor and director of the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education at Georgetown University. CME credit offered.

'Just Mercy' discussion

The Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity will host a virtual book club, Sept. 24, 6 p.m. to discuss Bryan Stevenson's book, "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption," and the health implications of institutional racism. Panelists will include Baylor's Dr. Ricardo Nuila, director of the Narrative Medicine Program, and Dr. Marc Robinson, professor of medicine; Dr. Lacy Johnson, English professor at Rice University; and Sebastian Johnson, criminal justice manager at Arnold Ventures. Women in Medicine Month

September is recognized as Women in Medicine Month. Just this past February, Baylor launched its chapter of the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science. Email Dr. Kimberly Lopez, associate director of community engagement, for more information on the group, and visit the AAMC for additional resources. Med student community outreach efforts

The Service Learning Program is a student-led, longitudinal volunteering experience addressing social determinants of health. Students recently discussed important topics related to social determinants of health and their community service projects from the 2019-2020 academic year at a virtual Zoom conference hosted by the School of Medicine. HR Open Enrollment news

The 2021 Open Enrollment period is coming soon – here is some important information to help you prepare. Questions? Email ask-insurance@bcm.edu or call 713-798-1500.

  • Review your current benefit elections and update your address and/or dependents' information. See these reminders and more.
  • Look for Open Enrollment texts from HR-Benefits through the Emergency Notification System. Not signed up for ENS yet? Enroll or update online.
  • Register to attend the virtual benefits fair on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Important Zoom update

Beginning Sept. 27, all Zoom meetings will be required to have either a passcode or waiting room enabled to ensure a safer, more secure meeting. If neither are turned on, a waiting room will be automatically enabled by default. These changes will further secure Zoom video conferences by preventing unwanted participants from joining your meetings. Review the Zoom Security Change knowledge article to learn more. Questions?
