Christner involved with new app for teens

Dr. Jennifer ChristnerDr. Jennifer Christner, dean of the School of Medicine, was involved in content development for a new online app for parents of teens called THRIVE. Sponsored by the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, the app provides resources related to teen health. Christner is the author of the section on ADHD. The app is available for download on iTunes and Google.

Early receives NSF grant for infrastructure improvements

Dr. Jeff EarlyJeff Early, director of communication technologies in the Office of Information Technology, has received a two-year, $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for a project to upgrade network infrastructure used at Baylor and other TMC institutions. The grant also will support development of a program to facilitate science data transfers. The grant is through the NSF’s Campus Cyberinfrastructure – Data, Networking and Innovation Program. Early is collaborating on the grant with Dr. Deniz Gurkan of the University of Houston and Scott Mace, a longtime consultant to Baylor.

Jamrich competes at track event

Dr. Milan JamrichDr. Milan Jamrich, professor of molecular and cellular biology, competed in the World Masters Track Championships in Lyon, France, last month, finishing second in his age category in the high jump event. Jamrich is pictured with his medal and his wife, Kathi Mahon, a former Baylor faculty member.

Lee earns grant to study fetal sonograms

Dr. Wesley LeeDr. Wesley Lee, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and his colleagues have received a three-year, $2.39 million grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for a study on fetal body composition and volumes. Their work will focus on precision and accuracy of fetal sonographic estimates.

Li receives NCI grant

Dr. Xiao-Nan LiA Baylor College of Medicine research team was one of five groups to receive a five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, to participate in the Pediatric Preclinical Testing Consortium to address key challenges related to the development of new therapies for children with cancer. Led by Dr. Xiao-Nan Li, associate professor of pediatrics, the Baylor research team will focus on brain cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. The Occupational Health Program will begin flu vaccination for staff, faculty, residents and students today, Sept 18. Upcoming vaccination dates and locations are:

Market Days Sept. 23

The next Market Days at BCM is Sept. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge in the main Baylor building. Vendors will include Chocolate and Sweetness, Gold Leaf Coffee and Kristi’s Kitchen. Mulberry Muse will also be onsite with high-quality consignment items. Market Days at BCM is a monthly event hosted by BCM’s Resource Stewardship & Sustainability Program.

Aesthetics open house Sept. 24

The Aesthetics Studio in the lobby of the Jamail Specialty Care Center will host an open house Thursday, Sept. 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. to introduce the Bare Minerals cosmetic and skin care line. Representatives will offer skin care and make-up tips. Take advantage of a 10 percent discount on purchases, receive a free gift with purchase and, for those who spend more than $100, get a make-up bag valued at $68. Light bites and refreshments will be served.

Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 25

The BCM Academy of Distinguished Educators will host the 11th Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at the main Baylor campus. Peer-reviewed posters that showcase educational scholarship at Baylor will be displayed. Stop by to view the posters, ask questions of presenters and enjoy some refreshments. Wellness 5K Oct. 10

Support student wellness initiatives by registering for the student-organized BCM Wellness 5K Race and 1K Fun Run is Saturday, Oct. 10, at Baylor. The event includes a competitive 5K and a kids’ fun run. Postevent festivities will be at the McGovern Commons. Find more information and register online.

New life insurance company

Genworth Life Insurance Company, is Baylor’s new provider for Group Long-Term Care Insurance. Genworth Life replaces CNA, which is no longer accepting new applicants under BCM’s group policy. Please note, if you currently have an insurance policy through CNA your policy will continue. Learn more about Genworth Life and how to enroll for 2016 coverage.

Sign up for annual softball tournament

The You FIRST Program will be hosting a co-ed softball tournament for Baylor students and employees Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Sportsplex. If you are interested in participating, complete the information form by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Participants must have a Baylor ID to play. If you have questions, contact youfirst@bcm.edu.
