HR event: Financial discussions

Shah named to Texana board

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah was appointed as the representative from Fort Bend County to the Board of Trustees of Texana, a nonprofit that provides behavioral healthcare and developmental disabilities services regionally. Shah is executive vice chair and professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Virani to serve as world heart advisor

Dr. Salim ViraniDr. Salim Virani, professor of medicine - cardiology, has been appointed to the World Health Organization's Technical Advisory Group on Noncommunicable Diseases. This WHO group is tasked with promoting innovative research and development of all aspects of prevention and control of NCDs and translating it into action globally, nationally and regionally.

Faculty earn educational grants

Baylor's Academy of Distinguished Educators has awarded Norton Rose Fulbright Educational Grants to five faculty members. Recipients are Dr. Kyler Godwin, assistant professor of medicine, and Dr. Kelley Arredondo, health services researcher at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, for "Increasing Course Engagement through Enduring Educational Products"; Dr. M. Tyson Pillow, associate professor of emergency medicine, and Dr. Adedoyin Adesina, assistant professor of emergency medicine, for "Utilization of Medical Interpreter Training to Enhance Communication with Patients"; and Dr. Jennifer Taylor, assistant professor of urology, for "Prevention of Burnout among Urology Residents by Implementing a Formal Resilience Curriculum." Award winners will submit poster abstracts to the Academy's Showcase of Educational Scholarship in 2022.

Educational scholarship showcase

The annual Academy of Distinguished Educators' Showcase of Education Scholarship will be held virtually today, Sept. 17, highlighting the work of Baylor faculty, staff and trainees. Join virtually at any time to view posters and hear your colleagues discuss their work. The showcase was first held in 2005 to provide a peer-reviewed forum for educational research.

Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds

Bioethics Grand Rounds continues Wednesday, Sept. 22, 5 p.m., on "The Value of Diversity in Healthcare Settings: What it Means and Why it Matters," by a panel of leaders from the Texas Medical Center. HR event: Preretirement planning

Human Resources and the personal financial management company Ayco present a day of webinars on preretirement planning for late-career employees, Sept. 22. View the full schedule and register for topics of interest. BCM BeWell points available.

BCM 5K

Sign up by Sept. 30 for early bird discounted pricing of $25 on the BCM 5K, a student-organized race and walk to support health and wellness initiatives in the community. The race will be held Oct. 16 in the TMC; T-shirts for all participants, with prizes for top racers. Registration increases to $30 after Oct. 1. Learn more and register.

Alumni Award nominations

Nominations for the annual Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Awards are open! Alumni Awards recognize alumni and faculty that have made significant contributions to their fields. Submit your nominations and learn more. The nomination deadline is Oct. 8, 2022.

Good-faith reporting resources

BCM supports and promotes a culture of disclosure where open and honest communications are the expectation, not the exception. Concerns related to inappropriate conduct reported in good faith are protected from non-retaliation by the College policy. When an issue arises in your department or school, communicate the incident promptly to your supervisor, manager or program director or to a faculty member, peer or physician. Anyone can submit a report, including anonymously, by phone toll free at 855-764-7292 or through the BCM Integrity Hotline website.

LCME updates

  • Virtual site visit: The School of Medicine will host a virtual site visit with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Sept. 27 – 29. The LCME survey team will review the school’s accreditation survey package and meet virtually with students, residents, staff and faculty as part of the process. At the conclusion of the visit, the survey team will submit a final report and the LCME will determine the accreditation status of the program and provide notification of status in Spring 2022. HR news: Performance management in learning system

Learning G.P.S. is the new online learning system for benefits-eligible employees. This month's highlighted topic is performance management. Two courses have been designed to assist managers with employee evaluation and goal setting: BCM Staff Performance for Managers and BCM Staff Goal Setting for Managers.
