Harvey Heroes

Erickson awarded grant by the National Kidney Foundation

Dr. Kevin EricksonDr. Kevin Erickson, assistant professor of medicine in the section of nephrology, was awarded the 2017 Southeast Texas Young Investigator Research Grant by the National Kidney Foundation. It will support a study on whether receiving regular kidney specialist care prior to developing end-stage renal disease helps patients remain employed after their kidneys fail. The Young Investigator Research Grant Program strives to improve the quality of life for those with kidney disease by funding promising young scientists.

Keyes earns lifestyle medicine grant

Sarah KeyesSarah Keyes, assistant professor in the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Allied Health Sciences, received a Health Resources and Services Administration grant for the Lifestyle Medicine Development Project. This five-year, $400,000 grant will help integrate lifestyle medicine, a new medical specialty that focuses on using lifestyle modalities such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management and tobacco cessation to prevent and treat chronic disease, into the PA Program curriculum. The project also includes the Career Development Plan, which will allow junior faculty to participate in faculty development opportunities and take the Lifestyle Medicine Boards offered by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine to become educational experts in the field.

Cybersecurity initiative info sessions

Anyone who uses a mobile device to access their Baylor email must download and install the Mobile Device Management (MDM) app. If you use VPN or MyApps externally to access College systems and services, you must download and install the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) App. Step-by-step instructions and instructional videos are available to assist you. Information sessions also are planned across multiple College locations. All sessions can be viewed remotely via Zoom videoconference.

Sept. 18: Eat a burrito to benefit Harvey relief

Craving a burrito? Baylor's Latino Medical Student Association Board will host a fundraiser at the Chipotle at 8505 S. Main St., Monday, Sept. 18, 4 to 8 p.m., with 50 percent of proceeds benefiting Harvey relief efforts. Present this flyer when ordering.

Sept. 21: Harvey T-shirts on sale to benefit employee relief

Harvey Relief ShirtsHarvey Recovery Effort T-shirts will be on sale for $25 Thursday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the E Hallway at main Baylor. Proceeds go to the Harvey Relief Fund for Baylor students, trainees, faculty and staff impacted by the storm. You can also preorder online. Thank you for supporting your BCM community!

Sept. 27-28: Ewing sarcoma research conference

The second Faris D. Virani International Ewing Sarcoma Conference is Sept. 27-28 at the Bioscience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main St. Presented by Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, it will bring together leading investigators in the field and will include keynote speakers, invited presentations and expert panel discussions in an effort to improve the lives of patients with Ewing sarcoma by fostering meaningful collaboration. There is no cost, but register online.

Provide dependent verification for 2018 Open Enrollment

To add dependents to your 2018 benefit plans, complete the Dependent Eligibility Verification Form and submit it along with the supporting documents such as a marriage license or birth certificate. This must be done before Oct. 23 or you will not be able to add your dependents until 2019. Submit documentation to ask-insurance@bcm.edu or fax 713-798-5141. Questions? Diversity and Inclusion Week donation drives

Diversity and Inclusion Week at Baylor will include donation drives benefiting the community in need following Harvey. From Sept. 18 to Oct. 6, donate diapers, pull-ups, baby wipes and school supplies to benefit Houston Diaper Bank, Casa De Esperanza and Baylor affiliated middle and elementary schools.
