Vachani appointed to quality of care group

Dr. Joyee VachaniDr. Joyee Vachani, assistant professor of pediatrics in the section of hospital medicine, was appointed by the American Academy of Pediatrics Education in Quality Improvement for Pediatric Practice (EQIPP) planning group for a two-year term. EQIPP is an innovative web-based quality improvement learning program that enables pediatric providers to assess and improve quality of care.

Compassion lecture with Mark Kline today

Dr. Mark Kline’s Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture on “BIPAI: Caring for the World’s Least Fortunate,” is today at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Kline is chair of pediatrics, physician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital and founder of the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative at TCH.

Evenings with Genetics Sept. 15

The transition from pediatric to adult care will be the focus of the Evenings with Genetics lecture Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Speakers will be Dr. Ellen Fremion and social worker Samuel Garcia of Baylor’s Transition Medicine Clinic. The program is free but registration is required.

Trust Your Gut Sept. 21

Dr. Hashem El-Serag, professor of medicine in gastroenterology, and Dr. Joseph Petrosino, director of the Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research, will provide insight on the microbiome environment of the gut and its effect on health at The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine’s educational luncheon at the Junior League of Houston. Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 25

The BCM Academy of Distinguished Educators will host the 11th Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at the main Baylor campus. Peer-reviewed posters that showcase educational scholarship at Baylor will be displayed. Stop by to view the posters, ask questions of presenters and enjoy some refreshments. Neglected tropical diseases focus of conference

Baylor’s National School of Tropical Medicine and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy will host “The United States and Mexico: Addressing a Shared Legacy of Neglected Tropical Diseases and Poverty” on Sept. 29 and 30, at the Baker Institute. The three-part event will include a student workshop, keynote address and full-day conference. Find more information and register online.

Contribute to Employee Emergency Relief Fund

The Employee Emergency Relief Fund assists Baylor employees who experience crisis from fire, flooding, illness, accidents and other emergencies. The fund was nearly depleted after the Memorial Day flood. Contributions can be made to the fund through personal check, credit card or payroll deduction. Learn more online.

Wellness news

The BCM BeWell program is offering an American Heart Association program called Check, Change, Control to help employees improve heart health. The four-month program runs from Sept. 14 to Jan. 14 and will help track and maintain a healthy blood pressure. Each month the AHA will provide information on different topics, including blood pressure health, nutrition, exercise and maintaining a healthy heart. Throughout the program, onsite activities will be offered, including a cooking demonstration. Register for the Check, Change, Control (click “Don’t have an account”).

Benefits-eligible employees also can review the BCM BeWell Vitality Portal webinar for information on how to register, navigate and use the wellness portal. Additional seminars, presentations and webinars are available on the BCM BeWell Educations Seminars Intranet page.

Sign up for annual softball tournament

The You FIRST Program will be hosting a co-ed softball tournament for Baylor students and employees Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Sportsplex. If you are interested in participating, complete the information form by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Participants must have a Baylor ID to play. If you have questions, contact youfirst@bcm.edu.
