Jafar-Nejad awarded for research

Dr. Hamed Jafar-NejadDr. Hamed Jafar-Nejad, associate professor of molecular and human genetics, was selected for an Alagille Syndrome Accelerator Award by The Medical Foundation, a division of Boston-based organization Health Resources in Action. The $25,000 grant from an anonymous donor will support his research to better understand Alagille Syndrome and test for potential therapies for the inherited disease, which is associated with liver, heart, eye and skeletal abnormalities, as well as characteristic facial features.

TMCx Demo Day Sept. 10

TMCx, TMC’s startup accelerator, will host its Demo Day Sept. 10, starting at 1 p.m. At this event, startups at the TMCx will showcase their medical device and digital health companies to an audience of investors, hospital stakeholders and corporate partners. These startups were chosen from more than 250 applicants and have been working at the TMC for the last 6 months to develop innovations in healthcare. Several startups with BCM ties will be part of the event, including BrainCheck, SemanticMD and Oxitone Medical. The event is open to interested faculty, staff and students from BCM. Compassion lecture Sept. 11

The next talk in the Compassion and the Art of Medicine series will be Sept. 11 at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium with Dr. Mark Kline, chair of pediatrics at Baylor and physician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital. Kline also is founder and president of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children’s Hospital. He will speak on “BIPAI: Caring for the World’s Least Fortunate.”

Making a Mark children’s art exhibit

Making a Mark, an exhibition of art and creative writing by children with cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, will open with a reception on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Auxiliary Bridge located on the third floor of the Texas Children’s Hospital Clinical Care Center. Sponsored by the Periwinkle Foundation, the event is open to the public and refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers are joint programs of Baylor and TCH.

Cycling fundraisers coming up

Two upcoming cycling events will benefit Baylor programs. Tour de Pink, the annual cycling event benefitting the Pink Ribbons Project, will be Saturday, Sept. 20, at Prairie View A&M. To sign up for the team, visit the event’s registration page and search for the Baylor College of Medicine team. For more information on the team, contact Meggin Crawford at mfg@bcm.edu. For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Glenna Vickers at picton@bcm.edu. The previous day, on Saturday, Sept. 19, the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund will host a cycling event benefitting Baylor’s Woman to Woman Program. The program pairs ovarian cancer survivors with newly diagnosed patients to provide support through the treatment process. The event, called Ovarian Cycle, is a three-hour indoor cycling event and will be held at the LA Fitness in the Texas Medical Center. Register online.

Bicycle safety class being offered

A bicyclist-education program called CyclingSavvy, which teaches the concepts and techniques needed to ride a bike safely and successfully on city streets with traffic, will take place Sept. 10. The program is for anyone who rides a bike for transportation or who would like to, but is held back by concerns of having a bad experience. Baylor students, faculty and staff who are interested in commuting by bike or just to get around town can learn more about the class online. New Mother’s Aid Stations

Two new Mother’s Aid stations have opened on the main Baylor campus, in rooms 449 AA and 409 AB. The rooms provide private space for nursing mothers to express breast milk during the workday.

You FIRST News

Sign up for annual softball tournament

The You FIRST Program will be hosting a co-ed softball tournament for Baylor students and employees Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Sportsplex. If you are interested in participating, complete the information form by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Participants must have a Baylor ID to play. If you have questions, contact youfirst@bcm.edu.
