Anding honored by nutrition group

Roberta AndingRoberta Anding, registered dietitian at Baylor, was recognized as a fellow by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. This designation recognizes her commitment to the field of dietetics and celebrates her professional accomplishments and pursuit of life-long learning. A fellow signifies that a member has lived up to the Academy’s values of customer focus, integrity, innovation and social responsibility.

Rosengart earns NIH grant

Dr. Todd RosengartDr. Todd Rosengart, the DeBakey-Bard Chair of Surgery, was awarded an NIH-National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute grant for his research on in situ cardiac infarct cellular reprogramming. The award is for $681,002 each year for four years.

Sikora leads research team funded by CRI

Dr. Andrew SikoraDr. Andrew Sikora is the recipient of a Cancer Research Institute Clinical Strategy Team Grant. The international team assembled for this grant includes John Hopkins Medical Institute, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the University of Technology (Sydney, Australia) and the University of Leiden (Leiden, Netherlands), with Baylor as the lead institution. The grant provides funding for outstanding investigative teams with high-risk/high-reward approaches to enhancing cancer immunotherapy.

Market Days Aug. 26

The next Market Days at BCM is Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor featuring vendors Cheeballsy’s, Chocolate and Sweetness, Gold Leaf Coffee and Revolucion Juice. Mulberry Muse will be there selling used consignment clothing and shoes, and the student group CHEF will bring in fresh produce from Central City Co-op. Submit pre-orders online by Aug. 23 to pick up produce at Market Days. The event is hosted by BCM’s Resource Stewardship & Sustainability Program. DocTalk Aug. 28

The next DocTalk is Friday, Aug. 28, from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Jamail Specialty Care Center, fourth floor, room 120-125, with Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine, speaking on “Know Your Baseline for Optimal Health.” Eligible employees who attend will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Breast Center to host Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference Sept. 18-19

Baylor is hosting a medical education conference on metastatic breast cancer jointly sponsored by the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and Theresa’s Research Foundation Sept. 18-19 in Houston at the Onstead Auditorium. Register now for wellness race

The annual student-organized BCM Wellness 5K Race and 1K Fun Run is Saturday, Oct. 10, at Baylor. Funds raised support local student wellness initiatives. BCM students and employees receive $3 off with coupon code myBCM at registration. The 1K fun run is free, and the first 50 registrants will get a free kid’s T-shirt. Baylor supports breastfeeding mothers

August has been designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Baylor supports nursing mothers by providing a private room free of intrusion for expression of breast milk. Mothers who are currently nursing and women who may be considering nursing their new infants can have access to pumping stations located at Main Baylor, McNair, Jamail, Baylor Clinic, Ben Taub, TCH, Veterans and the McGovern Campus. BCM BeWell news

BCM BeWell will present “Active Body, Active You” with topics to include the sitting disease, upper and lower cross syndrome, exercise principles and more. Register online. Eligible participants will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending. Email wellness@bcm.edu for more information.

Benefits-eligible employees have another opportunity to schedule an onsite screening during September at Main Baylor and Children’s Hospital of San Antonio or visit a Quest Diagnostics Patient Center through Nov. 30. Both options require a scheduled appointment. See the onsite schedule and register online.

Captains needed for annual softball tourney!

You FIRST will be hosting a softball tournament for BCM employees and students Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Sportsplex. Team captains are needed to recruit players and organize coed teams. If you are interested in serving as a team captain, sign up online by Friday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. A team captain conference call and softball signups will be held the week of Aug. 31.
