Dickinson named associate dean of research

Dr. Mary DickinsonDr. Mary Dickinson, professor and Kyle and Josephine Morrow Endowed Chair in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, has been named associate dean of research. In this position, she will serve as a liaison between the Office of the Dean of Research and the faculty in support of the research mission. She will maintain her research laboratory and also will continue to serve as academic director of the Optical Imaging and Vital Microscopy Core Lab. Dickinson served as the inaugural chair of the Faculty Senate and is now past-chair.

Entman honored for contributions to cardiovascular sciences

Dr. Mark EntmanDr. Mark Entman, professor of medicine – cardiovascular sciences and scientific director of the DeBakey Heart Center, was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Cardiovascular Science, Medicine and Surgery from the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences. He will receive the award at the Cardiovascular Forum in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. The Academy promotes the world-wide sharing of research and education information in the field of heart health.

Venkatramani named to journal editorial board

Dr. Rajkumar VenkatramaniDr. Rajkumar Venkatramani, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center and director of the Rare Tumors Program, was appointed to the editorial board of Pediatric Blood and Cancer, the premier publication focused on laboratory and clinical investigations of hematology/oncology in children and adolescents.

Aug. 24: TMC student mixer

Students and trainees from Baylor and other Texas Medical Center institutions are invited to the TMC's Networking Mixer on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Third Coast located on the 6th floor of the TMC Commons. Mix and mingle with other healthcare and life science students and trainees, and share your experiences here in the Texas Medical Center. Food and drinks will be provided, but RSVPs are strongly suggested as drink tickets will be limited. RSVP online.

Aug. 24: Physician networking event

Find a Physician Networking Happy Hour is Thursday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus in the first floor conference rooms. Physicians are invited to network with their colleagues and meet new physicians to build relationships and promote internal referrals. Food and beverages provided; free self-parking in the underground garage.

Aug. 25: Compassion and the Art of Medicine

The Matthew Carter Memorial lecture, part of the Compassion and the Art of Medicine series, is Friday, Aug. 25, at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Claire Bocchini, assistant professor of pediatrics, will focus on community health and advocacy in her talk. The Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture honors the memory of the first-year Baylor medical student killed in September 2000 and carries on his message of compassion and caring to successive generations of medical students and health professionals. The annual events include a lecture and day of community service by Baylor students.

Aug. 26: Surgical Collaboration Day

The Baylor College of Medicine Department of Surgery will host its Surgical Collaboration Day Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the TMC Innovation Institute, or TMCX, on the McGovern Campus. This event brings together local, national and international surgeons, clinicians, researchers and technologists to foster new, innovative collaborations to solve the most advanced and cutting-edge problems in healthcare and surgery. Attendance is open to start-ups and industrial companies, educators, researchers, technologists and the general public. Learn more and register online.
