Graduate School art show
The 10th annual Graduate School art show will be held Aug. 15-19 on the first and second floors of Alkek. Members of the BCM family submitted their artwork, including paintings, photography, jewelry, and pottery. An auction will take place with part of the proceeds benefiting the Arts in Medicine Program at the Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Center.
Houston Astros tickets
Employees can enjoy BCM Night with the Astros when the team faces the San Francisco Giants Friday, Aug. 19, at 7:05 p.m. The night will include postgame fireworks. Get tickets for BCM games with the Astros online, password: medicine.
Matthew Carter Lecture
The 2011 Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture will be held Friday, Aug. 19, in Cullen Auditorium at noon. The speaker this year will be Dr. Joslyn Fisher. All are welcome to attend.
The Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture and Service Day was established in memory of the first-year Baylor medical student killed in September 2000 as a way to carry on his message of compassion and caring to successive generations of medical students and health professionals. The annual lecture features individuals in the health care field who dedicate their careers to helping the less fortunate citizens of the world.
Educational Showcase abstracts due
Abstracts for the annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship are due Aug. 17. The annual showcase will be held Oct. 7. It features peer-reviewed poster displays that highlight work in medical education and awards three Educational Scholarship Recognition Awards. Recipients of these awards receive an honorarium of $500. Those considering submitting an abstract of their educational work to the showcase can find details about the submission process at Academy of Distinguished of Educators.
Medical terminology/anatomy course
Interested in learning about anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology? Sign up for BCM's 38th Annual Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Physiology Course. It begins Tuesday evening, Sept. 20, and runs through Nov. 15. All nine classes will be held in the Michael E. DeBakey Bldg., Rm. M-112 from 6-8:30 p.m. Those wishing to register can obtain forms by calling Dr. Robert E. Roush at 713-798-4611; by faxing him at 713-798-6688; or by e-mailing him at email@example.com. You may also register online at Huffington Center on Aging.
The cost of the course for those registering before Sept. 17 is $165, after which the fee rises to $175. The required text, “The Language of Medicine, Ninth Edition,” by Davi-Ellen Chabner, W.B. Saunders Co., costs $59.82. The book may be ordered from Amazon or other online booksellers.
