Khan to lead community health program

Dr. Fareed KhanDr. Fareed Khan, associate professor of family and community medicine, was named the assistant chief of staff for Ambulatory Care Services of the Harris Health System Community Health Program as the representative for Baylor College of Medicine. In that position, he also will serve as vice chair for Community Health Programs in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Khan has been in the department since 1998 and has dedicated himself to underserved patients and strengthening community centers. His tenure will begin Nov. 18.

Powers named to AABB committee

Dr. Jackie PowersDr. Jackie Powers, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center, was appointed as the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology representative on the AABB Committee on Donor Iron Safety and Health, a national committee that is developing recommendations on iron replacement in blood donors to prevent the development of iron deficiency, maintain the blood donor pool and ensure the maintenance of an adequate and safe blood supply.

HRSA grant to Baylor supports health equity programs

Dr. Toi HarrisBaylor's Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity and the Department of Family and Community Medicine received a five-year $3.3 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Centers of Excellence program. Baylor was one of 13 U.S institutions awarded a grant through this program in 2017 and one of only three in Texas. Associate Provost Dr. Toi Harris will serve as program director of the new Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research, which will promote diversity in medicine by focusing on programs aimed at undergraduate students and current students, fellows and faculty.

Aug. 12: Pop-up merchandise shop for Family Day

Baylor branded merchandise will be on sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in Alkek Lobby during Family Day, an annual event for first-year medical students and families. Come by and purchase T-shirts, jackets, water bottles, caps and much more, then get ready to show your Baylor spirit!

Aug. 12: TMC Orchestra at Miller Outdoor Theater

The Texas Medical Center Orchestra, which includes many members from Baylor, will play music of the Beatles at Miller Outdoor Theater, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The second half of the concert will feature an all-male vocal group called The Fab 5, a Beatles cover band. Admission is free.

Aug. 16: Faithful Paws visit

Join BCM BeWell in McNair Conference Room A on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from noon to 2 p.m. as the Faithful Paws pet therapy group visits again to provide stress relief to employees. Share your photos from the event in our Facebook group. Please email wellness@bcm.edu with questions.

Aug. 15-18: VA Quality Scholars Program

The VA Quality Scholars Program 2017 National Meeting and Summer Institute, themed "Demonstrating Value and Impact," is Aug. 15-18 in the TMC. Public sessions, all in Onstead Auditorium, include:
- Dr. Malaz Boustani, director of the Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science at the University of Indiana, Aug. 16, 3 p.m., followed by a reception hosted by the Vice Chair Group for Quality Improvement and Innovations of the Department of Medicine
- Dr. Troyen Brennan, executive vice president and chief medical officer of CVS Health, Aug. 17, 3 p.m.
- Poster presentations featuring quality improvement scholarship by VA Quality Scholars fellows and alumni as well as Baylor and VA faculty, Aug. 16, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Through Sept. 3: Book drive

The Med-Peds Interest Group, in partnership with the BCM Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program, is hosting a book drive to benefit the Harris Health MLK Clinic. New and gently used books for ages 6 to 18 are being accepted at locations across campus through Sept. 3. For more information email onyewuen@bcm.edu or marcanto@bcm.edu.

Welcome Carli Lloyd as brand ambassador

Olympic and World Cup champion soccer player Carli Lloyd is joining the Baylor College of Medicine team as the College's new brand ambassador. She will be featured in digital and print advertising focusing on the strength, confidence and dedication our community will find when receiving care at Baylor College of Medicine. Vote for Baylor researcher to present at SXSW

Dr. Xaq Pitkow, assistant professor of neuroscience, is a part of a group of researchers involved in an educational panel proposing their work for the next South by Southwest. Their project, called 21st Century Field Guide to Color, explores how color affects us and how it shapes our perceptions. Learn more about the project and then vote for it to be included in SXSW.
