Desai publishes new book on med student interviews

Dr. Samir DesaiDr. Samir Desai, assistant professor of medicine, has published a new book, “Multiple Mini Interview (MMI): Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty.” The book advises medical school applicants on how to best prepare for the MMI, an interview format used by many U.S. medical schools. It is available on Amazon.

Gilger honored as healthcare hero

Dr. Mark GilgerDr. Mark Gilger, pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and professor of pediatrics at Baylor, was the recipient of a 2015 Health Care Hero Award from the San Antonio Business Journal in the Outstanding Physician – Hospital-Based category. Gilger was at an international conference and unable to attend the award ceremony but was honored at a reception at CHOSA by his colleagues. Baylor is the academic partner of Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

Mattox presents in top surgeons series

Dr. Ken MattoxDr. Ken Mattox, Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor and chief of staff and surgeon-in-chief at Ben Taub Hospital, is the first speaker in a lecture series, “The Top 10 Surgeons of the World,” organized by the Ecuadorian Society of Surgery. He is speaking today, Aug. 7, at the School of Medicine of the Central University of Ecuador. Mattox is presenting several talks, including “Ten Operations That Changed My Life.”

DocTalk Aug. 13

The next DocTalk will be held Thursday, Aug. 13, from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Baylor Clinic, 11th floor conference room, featuring Dr. Theodore Shybut, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery speaking on sports injuries and surgeries. DocTalk is a new and informal series of lunch-time talks led by a member of the Baylor faculty on a variety of health topics. Bring your lunch and join the conversation. Eligible employees who attend will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points. Also, save the date for the Aug. 28 DocTalk at the Jamail Specialty Care Center with Dr. Jeffery Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine.

Doctors for Change forum Aug. 18

The Baylor community is invited to the Doctors for Change Access to Care Forum Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the University Eye Center on the University of Houston campus, 4901 Calhoun Road. A panel of community healthcare providers as well as patients will offer insight and solutions on issues Houstonians face on accessing care. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for students, and may be purchased online. Dinner will be provided. All proceeds support the organization’s educational outreach programs and projects.

Ride, volunteer with Baylor in Tour de Pink 2015

The Baylor team is gearing up for Tour de Pink 2015, the annual cycling event benefitting the Pink Ribbons Project. It will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, at Prairie View A&M University. Riders can choose from the following routes: 12, 23, 34, 47, 63, 81 and 100 miles. To sign up for the team, visit the event’s registration page and search for the Baylor College of Medicine team. The Emeriti Retiree Health Plan summary plan description has been updated and is now available on the Intranet. The information contained in this summary supersedes and replaces all previous material you may have received. If you are unable to access the summary plan description online, a hardcopy document can be sent to you via intra-institutional or regular mail at your request. For any questions or to request a hard copy of the summary, contact ask-retirement@bcm.edu.

Environmental safety information

BCM personnel who ship biological materials including patient (clinical) specimens, human-derived research materials, infectious microorganisms, certain genetically-modified organisms, etc. must complete a training program prior to shipping infectious or biological substances. To learn more about the shipping training, see the notice from the Office of Environmental Safety.
