Welcome, (more) new students!

Club and interest group fair

Summer rolls on, and new students keep rolling in. This week welcomed students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (pictured here at a fair for clubs and interest groups), the School of Medicine and the School of Health Professions Genetic Counseling Program. They join students in the Physician Assistant Program and Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, along with residents and fellows, who were welcomed earlier this summer. Title IX training available

The Office of Title IX and Disability Services offers information and resources on its InTouch page or Baylor web page, including a convenient link to request Title IX training for your department, center, office or clinic.

IT news

Beginning Sept. 1, the Help Desk email address it-support@bcm.edu will be retired. Tickets will no longer be created by using this address. You may still have a ticket created by visiting the IT Portal and using the "Report a Problem" feature or by contacting the Help Desk via phone at 713-798-8737.

Baylor upcoming flu study

Volunteers will be needed to participate in influenza research this fall. If you are interested in participating, please register here. You will be contacted later with additional details.

Blood drive

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive Tuesday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Those who donate will receive a free T-shirt and eligible participants can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points. Reserve your spot by signing up online.

DocTalk on preventive health: Tuesday, Aug. 9, noon-1 p.m., with Dr. Hermanjeet Grewal, regional director of the Baylor Medicine Vera Whole Health Employee and Family Care Clinic. Eligible employees will receive 50 BCM BeWell points after successfully completing the associated survey at the end of the presentation. Register here. Questions? Showcase of Educational Scholarship

The Academy of Distinguished Educators at Baylor will hold its annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 in Rayzor Lounge. Submit an educational research abstract by Aug. 15. Two categories are open for trainees and faculty/staff. The top presentations in each category will receive an Educational Scholarship Recognition award. Please see Annual Showcase of Educational scholarship guidelines for detailed information. Questions? DeBakey Award ceremony

Mark your calendars for the 2022 Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Award for Excellence in Research ceremony, Aug. 17, 2 – 4 p.m. Award recipients will be recognized by College leaders and will present a brief scientific lecture. The 2022 recipients are Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi and Dr. Peter Hotez (joint award), Dr. Joseph Hyser, Dr. Katherine King, Dr. Sundeep Keswani, Dr. Irina Larina and Dr. Scott LeMaire and Dr. Ying Shen (joint award). The in-person ceremony is by invitation only, but anyone may tune in to the livestream.

Bernhardt elected to FCCP

Dr. Brooke Bernhardt Dr. Brooke Bernhardt, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, recently was elected a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP). FCCP recognizes excellence in practice and science of clinical pharmacy, and fellowships are awarded to individuals who have made sustained contributions to the College and who have demonstrated exceptional performance in clinical pharmacy practice and/or research.

Rao named to Neurocritical Care Society board

Dr. Chethan RaoDr. Chethan Venkatasubba Rao, associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery and section head of vascular neurology and neurocritical care, recently was elected to the board of directors for the Neurocritical Care Society. Rao also is part of the Baylor's Center for Space Medicine and is medical director of the neuroscience ICU at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.   

Orthopedic surgery group honored for journal article

Dr. Mohamad HalawiDr. Melvyn HarringtonA group from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery has earned the Excellence Award in the second annual Academic Paper Contest of Arthroplasty Journal, published by BioMed Central, for their paper "Incidence and risk factors for acute kidney injury after total joint arthroplasty." Authors are Dr. Chun Hung, orthopedic surgery resident, medical student Theodore Zhang, Dr. Melvyn Harrington, professor of orthopedic surgery, and Dr. Mohamad Halawi, associate professor of orthopedic surgery.
