Garcia named to state advisory board

Samuel GarciaSamuel Garcia, senior medical social worker at Baylor's Transition Medicine Clinic, recently was appointed to the statewide Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) Advisory Committee. The committee assists the Health and Human Services Commission in developing and implementing the ADRC program in Texas, including designing and operating resource centers, obtaining stakeholder input and achieving program goals. He was appointed by the commissioner of the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.

Pitkow receives NSF award

Dr. Xaq PitkowDr. Xaq Pitkow, McNair Scholar and assistant professor of neuroscience, has won the prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation. The award supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of both education and research. The award will support Pitkow's research career over the next five years. Pitkow's work focuses on developing theories of the computational function of neural networks in the brain.

DocTalk Aug. 11 on psoriasis

The next DocTalk is Aug. 11 at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor with Dr. Harry Dao, assistant professor of dermatology, on psoriasis – what it is and how to treat it. DocTalk is a series of informal, lunchtime talks on a variety of health topics with Baylor doctors, followed by a question-and-answer session. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Community focus: global healthcare

Each Monday, Baylor College of Medicine has a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle as part of the newspaper's 115th Anniversary series. Ads so far have featured Baylor's global healthcare initiatives, the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan, our research collaboration with the Houston Zoo to find a cure for elephant herpes and the SMART program, among others. The ads are on display along the B hallway at main Baylor and also can be viewed on Baylor's community website, where you also can read feature stories on Baylor's community outreach efforts.
