Lakkis and colleagues honored for cardiology care

Dr. Nasser Lakkis, professor of medicine, program director for general and interventional cardiology and chief of the section of cardiology at Ben Taub Hospital, served as the team leader of a group of doctors at Ben Taub who earned the 2015 Platinum Performance Achievement Award from the ACTION Registry-Get With the Guidelines. The honor was given for demonstrating sustained achievement of performance measures in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction patients through the implementation of ACTION Registry-GWTG and application of American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Clinical Guidelines Recommendations.

Means earns endocrinology award

Dr. Anthony R. Means, professor of molecular and cellular biology, received the Outstanding Leadership in Endocrinology Award from the Endocrine Society. The award recognizes outstanding leadership in fundamental or clinical endocrinology. Means is known for his work on calcium signaling and has mentored more than 200 students and fellows, many of whom have emerged as leaders in their respective fields. He is professor emeritus of pharmacology and cancer biology at the Duke University School of Medicine and co-director emeritus of the Duke Cancer Institute.

Yao receives funding for pancreatic cancer research

Dr. Qizhi Cathy Yao, professor of surgery and of molecular virology and microbiology, pathology & immunology, and pharmacology, received the Barry Stephen Smith Memorial Pancreatic Cancer Award. Yao received the grant through the NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Cancer Center for her pilot project “A Personalized Pre-Clinical Study of a Novel Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy.” The award is new for 2015 and provides one $50,000 pilot project award per year for the next five years to support translational or clinical research focusing on pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Yao is the first recipient of this award.

Annual Graduate Student Art Show Aug. 3-7

The annual Graduate Student Art Show will be held Aug. 3-7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Alkek Lobby and on the second floor of the Alkek building with proceeds benefiting the Arts in Medicine program at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. The show will include paintings, photography, jewelry, handmade crafts and more. This year’s show will offer electronic bidding on a computer provided at the event or on any device using the link provided at the event. A short program will be held Friday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. in the DeBakey Library and Museum with remarks from people involved in the art show and in the Arts in Medicine program, followed by a reception in Alkek Lobby.

DocTalk Aug. 13

The next DocTalk will be held Thursday, Aug. 13, from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Baylor Clinic, 11th floor conference room, featuring Dr. Theodore Shybut, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery speaking on sports injuries and surgeries. DocTalk is a new and informal series of lunch-time talks led by a member of the Baylor faculty on a variety of health topics. Bring your lunch and join the conversation. Eligible employees who attend will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Dan L Duncan Cancer Center awarded elite NCI Comprehensive Status

Baylor’s Dan L Duncan Cancer Center has been awarded the highest designation possible by the National Cancer Institute – Comprehensive Status. The Duncan Cancer Center is one of only 45 in the U.S. and two NCI Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Houston, along with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The Center’s team completed a rigorous review and site visit from the NCI to achieve this milestone. For more information on the significance of this new designation, see the press release here.

Grant opportunities through Center for Professionalism

Have an idea for a scholarly activity related to professionalism? The Center for Professionalism will award a small number of grants for $300 to $1,000 to members of the Baylor community to fund projects to promote respect, integrity, innovation, teamwork and excellence. Charity Bowl proceeds presented

Baylor medical students presented checks in the amount of $6,000 each to Dr. David Buck, professor of family and community medicine and president and founder of the HOMES Clinic, and to Pat Sorrells, president and CEO of Camp for All. Funds were raised for the two organizations through the 2015 Charity Bowl, the annual student-organized charity event, which was held this year in March at the Palace Bowling Lanes.
