Savely elected president of health physics society

Dr. Susanne SavelyDr. Susanne Savely, radiation safety officer and assistant professor of medicine and radiology, recently was elected to serve as president of the South Texas Chapter of the Health Physics Society. Savely, who has been a member of the society for 20 years, will serve a three-year term as president-elect, president and past-president. The society develops scientific knowledge in the study of radiation, devises practical means to protect people and their environment from harmful effects of radiation, hosts meetings to discuss scientific endeavors, encourages scientific research and education on radiation protection and aids in research/education opportunities. She also delivered a presentation titled “A Pathway to Compliance with New Fluoroscopy and CT Regulations in Texas,” co-authored by Dr. Ben Archer, professor of radiology, and Matthew Wylie, J.D., at the 60th Health Physics Society National Meeting in Indianapolis on July 14.

Shah appointed to emergency services council

Dr. Manish ShahDr. Manish Shah, assistant professor of pediatrics, was appointed by the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary to a two-year term to represent the sector of pediatric emergency physicians on the National Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council. The purpose of NEMSAC is to serve as a nationally recognized council of emergency medical services representatives to provide and consult with the Federal Interagency Committee on Emergency Medical Services and the Secretary of Transportation on matters relating to EMS on a national level.

St. Baldrick’s grant recipients

Dr. Peter Wasswa, assistant professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Mireya Velasquez, instructor in pediatrics, have received grants recently from St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Wasswa was awarded a $330,000 International Scholar Award for his project studying the prevalent types of leukemia and lymphoma in children in Malawi, Africa. Velasquez received a $91,000 extension of her Fellow Award for her project on immunotherapy for blood cancers.

Friends of TMC Library fundraiser

The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library annual fundraiser will be held Friday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Institute of Molecular Medicine Atrium, 1825 Pressler. The event will include camaraderie with colleagues, music, wine, food and a tribute to Dr. Herbert Fred of UT Houston, whose career spans more than 60 years. Bob Allen, Channel 11 sports anchor, will serve as emcee. Tickets are $250, including a one-year membership to the Friends; $100 for event only; and $50 for students. Includes valet parking. Faculty Group Practice leadership elected

Dr. Michael Coburn, professor and chair of urology, was elected the new chair of the Faculty Group Practice Board of Governors, and Dr. Todd Rosengart, professor and chair of surgery, is the new vice-chair. Their two-year terms begin immediately. The Faculty Group Practice Board of Governors is the governing body of the clinical mission of the College. It is composed of 19 clinical chairs, three center directors and four at-large governors.

BCM BeWell News

Benefits-eligible employees have one last chance to schedule an onsite biometric screening in September at Main Baylor and at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio or may schedule a screening at a Quest Diagnostics Patient Center through Nov. 30. Both options require a scheduled appointment. More information is available online.
