2017 Chao Physician-Scientist Award winners

Dr. Jonathan DaviesDr. James OrengoDr. Geoffrey PreidisThe recipients of the 2017 Baylor College of Medicine Chao Physician-Scientist Awards have been announced. The awards provide funding for young investigators who are beginning their independent research careers and are made possible through the support of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation of Houston. This year's awardees and their projects are:
- Dr. Jonathan Davies, assistant professor of pediatrics – neonatology, "Adenosine signaling in bronchopulmonary dysplasia"
- Dr. James Orengo, assistant professor of neurology, "Unraveling the mechanism of motor neuron degeneration in Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Type 1"
- Dr. Geoffrey Preidis, clinical postdoctoral fellow in pediatrics – gastroenterology, "Nuclear receptor mediated bile acid alterations and coagulopathy in protein-energy undernutrition"

July 20: Healthy eating talk with Roberta Anding

BCM BeWell presents registered dietitian Roberta Anding on Thursday, July 20, at noon in McMillian Auditorium at main Baylor for a discussion on healthy eating tips and easy ways to break bad eating habits. Benefits-eligible employees who attend and sign in before 12:15 p.m. will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Retirement reception for Slaughter July 21

Dr. Gayle Slaughter, associate dean for graduate education and diversity, is retiring after nearly 40 years at the College. The Baylor community is invited to a reception in her honor Friday, July 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Alkek Lobby.

Health Museum exhibit on the human genome

The NHGRI-Smithsonian exhibition, Genome: Unlocking Life's Code, is showing at the Health Museum until Sept. 11, 2017. Through interactive displays, specimens, artifacts and replicas, the exhibit explores how genomic science is influencing people's lives and the impact it is having on science, medicine and nature. Keep an eye out for Dr. Amy McGuire, director of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, in one of the short videos on the timeline of the human genome project. Discounted tickets for Baylor employees and trainees are available on the discount section of the intranet or by showing your Baylor ID when buying tickets at the museum.

Genetic Counseling Program

Baylor College of Medicine now offers a Genetic Counseling Program that will award a Master of Science degree through the School of Allied Health Sciences. This new program will prepare professionals to work as part of the healthcare team helping individuals and families navigate the ever-evolving role of genetics in the management of health and disease. If you know individuals who may be interested in pursuing a degree in genetic counseling, please encourage them to visit the program's website.

Policy updates

Eleven new and revised policies recently were published in the College's Policy and Procedures Manual. They address employee relations issues concerning standards of conduct, absenteeism and progressive discipline, compliance topics involving vendor interactions and protected health information, administrative changes to policies on authorship and Graduate Medical Education, and functions of the Office of the Ombudsman. Billing compliance education required for new providers

The new Billing Compliance Education Policy: Requirements for New Providers, 31.3.04, requires all new BCM providers to attend a mandatory billing compliance education session within 45 days of notification from the billing compliance department. New providers are notified via their BCM e-mail within two weeks of their hire date. New provider education classes are available each month at various days and times. The schedule for classes and registration information may be found here. Failure to complete new-provider education within the time period outlined in the policy can result in suspension of billing until the required education is completed. The policy has been endorsed by the Institutional Policy Committee and Executive Compliance Committee and approval by the Board of Trustees is pending.
