Lerner to co-lead NCI Genitourinary Cancers Steering Committee

Dr. Seth LernerDr. Seth Lerner, professor of urology and a member of the NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor, has been elected urologic oncology co-chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Genitourinary Cancers Steering Committee. The committee leverages current NCI-funded clinical trial networks, grants and consortia and involves the broad oncology community to address the design and prioritization of phase 2 and phase 3 trials. His appointment was effective July 7.

Harpavat, Triggs earn career development awards

Dr. Sanjiv Harpavat, assistant professor of pediatrics – gastroenterology, and Nicole Triggs, M.S.N., instructor in pediatrics – gastroenterology, received research and career development awards from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Harpavat received the Jan Albrecht Clinical and Translational Research Award in Liver Diseases for his research project “Assessment of a Novel Newborn Screening Tool for Biliary Atresia.” Triggs received a 2015 NP/PA Clinical Hepatology Fellowship. The fellowships provide support for certified and licensed nurse practitioners or physician assistants pursuing a full-year of training focused on clinical care in hepatology.

Chakraborty, Parihar receive research support

Dr. Rikhia Chakraborty and Dr. Robin Parihar, both clinical instructors in the department of pediatrics – oncology, have each been awarded a Young Investigator Grant from Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Designed to help young researchers pursue innovative projects, these grants will provide funds totaling $100,000 over two years. Chakraborty’s project focuses on treatment of Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Parihar’s on immunotherapy approaches for solid tumors.

Getaway to Good Health celebrations

Participants in the Getaway to Good Health fitness campaign sponsored by BCM BeWell who walked 790,000 virtual steps to reach New Orleans by July 1 will receive T-shirts and souvenirs at BCM BeWell Mardi Gras themed celebrations! Celebrations for qualified participants will be July 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor; July 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CNRC Howland Auditorium; and July 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Baylor Clinic room 11D. The first DocTalk, “Skin Health,” will be held Wednesday, July 15, from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the McNair Conference Room A with Dr. Ramsey Markus, professor of dermatology. The second DocTalk, “Sports Surgery: ACL, Rotator Cuff – Q&A With an Orthopedic Sports Expert,” is Tuesday, July 21, from noon to 12:45 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium featuring Dr. Theodore Shybut, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery. Bring your own lunch! Benefits-eligible employees will receive 200 Vitality points.

Tickets available for play that raises Alzheimer’s awareness

Baylor’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center, African Americans Against Alzheimer’s and GD Productions are teaming up to bring Garrett Davis’ national award-winning stage play, “Forget Me Not,” to Houston. The play focuses on an African American family struggling to accept and manage their father’s illness after ignoring warning signs for the disease. It is meant to not only bring to light the difficult decisions families must make, but also to educate the viewers on the disease. “Forget Me Not” comes to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts for a one-time performance, Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. as part of a national tour. Tickets are free of charge but pre-registration is required. Watch a preview of the play and register for tickets.

ESL conversation group

The TMC Library has started a weekly English as a second language conversation group. Those just learning English can join this group for conversation in a friendly setting. It will be held Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the street level conference room beginning July 23. Bring your own lunch!

Submit abstracts for educational scholarship showcase

All Baylor medical students, residents, fellows and faculty are invited to submit an abstract to BCM’s Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship, which will be held Friday, Sept. 25. The deadline for abstract submission is Monday, Aug. 3, 2015 at 5 p.m. Abstracts are welcome in areas including educational content development, instructional design and delivery, learner assessment, course management and needs assessment. Get submission guidelines and forms.
