Curley appointed CHI oncology service line chief

Dr. Steven CurleyDr. Steven Curley, professor and chief of surgical oncology, was appointed Oncology Service Line chief for CHI St. Luke’s Health Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. As service line chief he will work with CHI St. Luke’s Oncology Service Line, CHI National Oncology Service Line, private practice oncologists, physician partners and the Dan L Duncan Cancer Center on strategic and programmatic initiatives.

Ellis receives award for breast cancer research

Dr. Matthew EllisDr. Matthew Ellis, director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, has received the Stand Up To Cancer 2015 Laura Ziskin Prize to advance studies of the defective DNA repair mechanisms in breast cancer. The $250,000, two-year grant will fund a joint project with Dr. Charles Swanton at the Institute for Cancer Research in London. The prize is named for Laura Ziskin, legendary Hollywood producer who co-founded Stand Up To Cancer. Ziskin lived with breast cancer for seven years before she died in 2011. The prize, inaugurated in 2012, was created with $1.1 million designated for this purpose in Ziskin’s will.

Perkins earns nursing award

Patricia Perkins, a certified nurse midwife in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, is a recipient of the 2015 Ansell H.E.R.O. Nurse Service Award for her outstanding commitment to patient care. Nominations for the award were submitted nationally, and the top 10 nominees with the most votes in an online poll have received the award.

Baylor’s team wins international Simlympics competition

Baylor Simlympics teamThe Baylor Simlympics team won the international Simlympics competition at the annual conference of the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The competition involves medical students working to stabilize and treat a simulated, critically-ill patient. The team includes first-year medical students Luis Fernandez, Andrew Kohner, Saagar Patel and Evan Strobelt and second-year student Lakshay Jain. Their faculty sponsor is Dr. Tyson Pillow, assistant professor of emergency medicine and medical director of the Simulation and Standardized Patient Program at Baylor.

BCM BeWell nutrition and exercise presentations

Join the BCM BeWell Program for upcoming nutrition and exercise presentations. Objectives include learning what a balanced diet looks like, eating in moderation, foods you should be eating and more. Presentations will be held Wednesday, July 8, from noon to 1 p.m., Room M321/323 at Main Baylor, and Thursday, July 9, from noon to 1 p.m., at the John P. McGovern Campus, NABS OS186. Register online and feel free to bring your lunch. Benefits-eligible employees and residents will receive 100 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending. Baylor introduces DocTalk, features Markus for first presentation

Baylor is introducing an informational series of talks called DocTalk. These events will offer a chance to meet Baylor faculty, learn about health topics and ask related questions. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring their own lunch. Benefits-eligible employees will receive 200 Vitality points. The series will launch with Dr. Ramsey Markus, professor of dermatology, addressing overall skin health on July 15 from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the McNair Conference Room A. The second talk will be July 21 from noon to 12:45 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus, featuring Dr. Theodore Shybut, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery, speaking on sports injuries, hydration and stretching.

The Houston Business Journal has ranked Baylor College of Medicine the No. 1 Healthiest Employer among companies with 5,000 or more employees. Others on that list include BP Corp.
