Awards and Recognitions

Rimawi honored for excellence in his field

Dr. Mothaffar RimawiDr. Mothaffar Rimawi, medical director of Baylor’s Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, was selected to receive the C. Kent Osborne Award for Medical Excellence for his outstanding contributions to breast cancer research, advocacy and patient care. The award was established last year by the Center’s Advisory Council and is named for Dr. Kent Osborne, director of the NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor who also is Rimawi’s mentor. It will be presented at the 2015 Neiman Marcus Stiletto Strut and Luncheon Sept. 25, one of the center’s largest fundraising events.

Medical student Young selected for kidney scholar program

Sarah YoungSarah Young, class of 2017, was one of only 30 medical students from across the country selected to participate in the 2015 American Society of Nephrology Tutored Research and Education for Kidney Scholars program, an initiative of the society’s Workforce Committee. The program fosters interest in nephrology and research through a weeklong intensive retreat focused on kidney physiology followed by a yearlong mentoring program. Dr. Jenny Pan, assistant professor of medicine – nephrology, will serve as Young’s mentor.

BCM BeWell nutrition and exercise presentations

Join the BCM BeWell Program for upcoming nutrition and exercise presentations. Objectives include learning what a balanced diet looks like, eating in moderation, foods you should be eating and more. Presentations will be held Wednesday, July 7, from noon to 1 p.m., Room M321/323 at Main Baylor, and Thursday, July 8, from noon to 1 p.m., at the John P. McGovern Campus, NABS OS186. Register online and feel free to bring your lunch. Benefits-eligible employees and residents will receive 100 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending. College News

CVRI accepting applications for research awards

Applications for pilot awards through the Cardiovascular Research Institute will be accepted until 6 p.m. Monday, June 29. The awards support cardiovascular research that will promote collaborations between multiple investigators and are likely to lead to externally funded grants in the foreseeable future. All Baylor faculty members who are members of the CVRI (CVRI membership is free) are eligible. Find more information online.

Transition medicine grants available

Through the support of the Ligums family, the Baylor Transition Medicine Clinic announces the availability of one-year grants for projects focusing on late adolescence and young adults who have chronic conditions originating in childhood or who are transitioning from pediatric to adult care. The funding supports quality improvement in the transition experience of this patient population, with the ability to partner with community leaders or interest groups. Awards are up to $10,000, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. For more information, email Caitlyn.Barrow@bcm.edu.

Nuila’s TEDx talk online

A TEDx by Dr. Ricardo Nuila, assistant professor of medicine and in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Care Policy, on the value of storytelling in medicine delivered at Rice University is now available online.

Asthma study seeking participants

Baylor’s Environmental Health Service is seeking participants for a home-based asthma study. Study participants must be African American, age 18 or older, who live in Houston and Harris County with asthma that is not well controlled. The study will provide free help in reducing asthma triggers at home and elsewhere, free tools to help make the home healthier and compensation for time and parking. Baylor MS150 jerseyThe Baylor MS150 team had great looking jerseys, and now you can vote for them in an online contest! The Primal People’s Choice Jersey Contest presented by KSBJ is a friendly competition to vote for your favorite jersey out of the 48 participating MS 150 teams. Voting will be open through July 17. The top 10 winners will be recognized at the team awards party in October. Email wellness@bcm.edu for assistance.
