Antonsen honored for advancing space medicine

Dr. Erik AntonsenDr. Erik Antonsen, assistant professor of emergency medicine and in the Center for Space Medicine, was the recipient of the 2018 Joseph Kerwin Award in recognition of his work to advance the understanding of human physiology during spaceflight. The award, presented last month in Dallas at the Aerospace Medical Association Annual Scientific Meeting, honors former astronaut Joe Kerwin and honors innovation in the practice of space medicine.

Liu recognized for contributions to computational biology

Dr. Zhandong LiuDr. Zhandong Liu, assistant professor of pediatrics – neurology at Baylor and researcher at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, received a Distinguished Service Award from the International Association for Intelligent Biology and Medicine. Liu was recognized for his service and contributions to the field of computational biology and for his leadership of the organization's annual international conference.

Neuroscientists named as prestigious scholars

Dr. Nuo LiDr. Mingshan_Xue-Dr. Nuo Li, assistant professor of neuroscience and a McNair Scholar, was named a 2018 Pew Scholar in biomedical sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew Scholars are early in their careers and become part of a community of researchers who meet annually to discuss their research and exchange ideas with peers in fields outside of their own. -Dr. Mingshan Xue, assistant professor of neuroscience and a researcher with the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, was awarded the prestigious 2018 McKnight Scholar Award for scientists who are in the early stages of establishing their own independent laboratories and research careers and who have demonstrated a commitment to neuroscience. June 23: Pride Day

Be sure to look for Baylor student groups in partnership with the Teen Health Clinic at the 40th Annual Houston Pride Festival, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 23, in Tranquility Park. All members of the BCM community are invited to march with the groups in the Pride Parade that evening. For more information on the festival or parade, please e-mail Martavius Lovall.

June 28: World Cup photo op during lunch!

Get in on the excitement at a World Cup-themed photo op on Thursday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the courtyard at main Baylor, or in the cafeteria if it's raining. There will be plenty of props and signs to show your pride in your favorite World Cup team, and you can catch a game over lunch on the cafeteria television. Photos will be shared in College communications and on social media.

June 28: Team Launch Capstone

The Team Launch Capstone will be held from 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, at main Baylor, room M112. During this event, student teams from the Team Projects course will present their project proposals for competitive judging. Team Launch and College leadership also will recognize the contributions of faculty, students and others to the Team Launch program.

OncLive State of the Science Summit: Breast Cancer will present the latest research for healthcare professionals on Wednesday, July 11, 5 to 9 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Houston Greenway Plaza. The summit is sponsored by Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and co-chaired by Dr. Matthew Ellis, professor and director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center. Abstracts are being accepted for the annual Baylor College of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators Showcase of Educational Scholarship, Baylor's premier venue for highlighting scholarship in medical education in a peer-reviewed format. Submit abstracts online by Aug. 1 at 5 p.m.

BCM BeWell news: Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers membership plans are available to benefits-eligible Baylor employees. M.D./Ph.D. student earns inaugural Dacso Award

The inaugural Dacso Award in Research Excellence was presented to M.D. /Ph.D. student David Bader. The award was created by Dr. Clifford Dacso, Baylor professor of molecular and cellular biology, in the name of his parents, Dr. Magda Rona and Dr. Michael Dacso, to support a medical, graduate or M.D./Ph.D. student in the molecular and cell biology graduate program. Bader has conducted research on examining the mitochondrial metabolism that fuels the growth and progression of prostate tumors in the lab of his mentor, Dr. Sean McGuire. He was recognized in a small ceremony with Dr. Clifford Dacso, Dr. Bert O’Malley, chair of the department, and McGuire, and received a plaque and an award of $2,000.
