Chao earns Burroughs Wellcome award

Dr. Hsiao-Tuan ChaoDr. Hsiao-Tuan Chao, instructor in the Department of Pediatrics, associate program director of the child neurology residency program and clinical child neurologist, received a highly competitive 2018 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists, which provides $700,000 in funding over five years as physicians transition into their full-time careers. Christner named to AMA panel

Dr. Jennifer ChristnerDr. Jennifer Christner, dean of the School of Medicine, was invited to serve on the American Medical Association panel on enhancing medical student experiences in light of the new CMS policy changes for electronic health records documentation. Join the discussion on this topic on the AMA online forum through June 22.

Loor, Cheema receive AATS Foundation funding

Dr. Gabriel LoorDr. Faisal CheemaDr. Gabriel Loor, associate professor of surgery, and Dr. Faisal Cheema, director of research and innovations for the division of cardiothoracic transplantation and circulatory support in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, have been selected for a Surgical Investigator Award from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Foundation. Their multi-institution project will study extracorporeal life support during bilateral lung transplantation and its implications on the development of primary graft dysfunction.

Pederson serves as visiting professor

Dr. Chris PedersonDr. William "Chris" Pederson, professor of surgery, recently was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He gave Grand Rounds to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery titled "Vascularized Bone Transfer: Indications and Issues" and Grand Rounds to the Division of Plastic Surgery titled "Refinements in Innervated Muscle Transfer to the Extremities." Pederson also is the Samuel Stal Endowed Chair in Plastic Surgery and is the head of hand surgery and microsurgery at Texas Children's Hospital.

Today: O&P White Coat

The Orthotics and Prosthetics Program Class of 2019 White Coat Ceremony is this evening at 6 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, followed by a reception in the O&P lab. This event marks the students' completion of their didactic training and transition to becoming healthcare providers.

June 19 – 20: Health equity and diversity events

-Learn more about health equity research and initiatives at the Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research Summer Research Summit Tuesday, June 19, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. CME credit available. See schedule.
-Dr. David Acosta, chief diversity officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges, will speak on "Bridge over Troubled Waters: Crossing the Cultural Divide to Talk about Race & Racism in Academic Medicine and Scientific Institutions," noon on Wednesday, June 20, in room 201A.

June 22: Global surgery innovations forum

The Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center, INSTINCT, will host its next Think Tank on global surgery innovations Thursday, June 21, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Jaworski Classroom, 187A, at main Baylor. Held every two months with a specific theme, Think Tank sessions offer a collaborative venue for discussion and exploration of new ideas. Learn more and register.

Erdman to lead PA program

Katherine Erdman will serve as interim program director of the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions, effective July 1. Erdman, assistant professor in the program, will provide leadership and management of the program, including continuing preparations for the upcoming accreditation visit.

The Office of Communications and Community Outreach and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity are looking for insight into how students, faculty and staff are involved in community service/engagement. STAT, a national online publication focused on health, medicine and scientific discovery, is seeking nominations for STAT Wunderkinds – postdocs, residents and other young scientists who are already doing groundbreaking work. Winners will be highlighted this fall. Nominate online by June 30.
