Award and Recognitions

Brownlee authors book chapters

Nancy BrownleeNancy Brownlee, nurse practitioner in the Department of Urology, served as the author of two chapters in the "Manual of Men's Health," written by nurse practitioners and physician assistants for advanced practice providers. Her chapters focus on "History and Physical" and "Peyronie's Disease." The book is available on Amazon.

Kline recognized for global humanitarianism

Dr. Mark KlineDr. Mark Kline, chair of pediatrics at Baylor and pediatrician-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital, received the International Humanitarian and Global Health Leadership Award from the U.S. Cooperative for International Patient Programs in recognition of his exceptional contributions to global health and international humanitarian initiatives. He received the award June 13 at the USCIPP Leadership Awards Dinner at the Petroleum Club of Houston, which is held in conjunction with the organization's annual meeting to discuss best practices in caring for international patients and in the delivery of healthcare abroad.

Faculty selected for leadership training

Dr. Heather HaqDr. Wendy Allen-Rhoades-Dr. Heather Haq, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, was selected to participate in the highly competitive American Academy of Pediatrics Young Physicians Leadership Alliance training program, designed to develop leaders and build a leadership community amongst early career pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists.
-Dr. Wendy Allen-Rhoades, also assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, was one of two physicians selected as an American Society of Clinical Oncology 2019-2020 Health Policy Leadership Development Program Fellow. She will receive training in leadership, communication and advocacy along with practical experience working with ASCO staff to shape cancer-related policies that directly affect individuals with cancer and clinical care.

Market Days, hosted by Baylor's Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program, returns June 17, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Vendors will be selling local products. See all vendors.

June 18: Health Equity Research Summit

The 2019 Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research Summer Research Summit is Tuesday, June 18, exploring current topics in health equity and featuring a keynote talk by Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of the American Medical Association. Open to physicians and other healthcare professionals, researchers, staff and trainees. Online registration is $35; students and trainees, $10. CME credit will be offered.

June 18: World Cup fun!

It's the women's turn for the World Cup! Show your excitement and your U.S.A team pride (or whichever team you're rooting for!) at a World Cup-themed photo op on Tuesday, June 18, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the E hallway by the cafeteria at main Baylor. Photos will be shared in College communications and on social media. Can't make it to main Baylor? Send photos of you and your colleagues in your World Cup gear or team colors to Anna.Kiappes@bcm.edu for inclusion on social media.

June 20: Joint cancer center symposium

The 2019 joint symposium of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center, focused on drug development, is Thursday, June 20, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave., including speakers from both institutions and a keynote talk by Dr. Roy Herbst of the Yale Cancer Center. June 21-23: Rare disease conference

The National Organization for Rare Disorders hosts for the first time in Houston the Living Rare, Living Stronger NORD Patient & Family Forum starting Friday, June 21, at Hilton Americas, 1600 Lamar St. The forum brings the rare disorders community together with physicians, medical students and allied health professionals for a program of learning, sharing and connection, including speakers from Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital. Register online.

June 22: Houston Pride Festival

BCM Pride and SPECTRUM student groups along with the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity will be hosting a table at the 2019 Houston Pride Festival Saturday, June 22, from noon – 7 p.m. Stop by booth A32 near the corner of Bagby and McKinney to say hello and pick up information from the Baylor Teen Health Clinic and promotional items. LGBT+ Pride Month serves as an important reminder that Baylor is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all community members, guests and visitors.


College News

Applications open for quality improvement course

Applications are open for the Institute for Continuing Professional Development in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Jumpstart Course. This intermediate-level training course for healthcare providers offers hands-on training in quality improvement to enhance their clinical practice and develop skills in mentoring trainees. There is no charge to attend the course but space is limited. Learn more and apply online by June 30 for the fall course. In addition, faculty members are being sought to coach and mentor faculty and trainees and to serve as workshop leaders at the Jumpstart Course. See eligibility requirements. Questions? No time for an in-office doctor visit? Try the virtual office visit option available to employees enrolled in a Baylor medical plan. Talk to a doctor directly from a mobile device or computer for non-emergency conditions like the flu, cold, pink eye, rashes or fever. Access a virtual UnitedHealthcare provider by logging into My UHC or through the Health4me app. Co-pays apply; behavioral health services not available. Volunteer opportunity: New fathers needed for survey

Fathers of children between the ages of 5 to 11 years are needed to complete an online survey in English or Spanish for a study being conducted by the Children's Nutrition Research Center. The 30-minute survey focuses on fathers' interactions with their child to promote physical activity and eating behaviors. Volunteers will receive $15 for completing the survey.
