Michaels deliver commencement address at alma mater

Lloyd and Barbara Ann MichaelDr. Lloyd Michael, distinguished emeritus professor of medicine and former senior associate dean of admissions, and Barbara Ann Smith Michael, assistant professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences, delivered the keynote address at Keystone College’s 144th commencement exercises held at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pa., on May 16. The Michaels were the first ever married couple among Keystone alumni to address the graduates. Founded in 1868, Keystone College is a private, co-ed, residential, culturally diverse liberal arts institution and was the first higher education institution in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

2015 Chao Physician-Scientist Award winners

Dr. Jason HouDr. Rachel RauThe 2015 Chao Physician-Scientist Award recipients are Dr. Jason Hou, assistant professor of medicine – gastroenterology and hepatology, for his project, “Patient-Centered Comparative Effectiveness of Colorectal Cancer Surveillance in IBD,” and Dr. Rachel Rau, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology, for her project “Defining the Role of DOT1L in DNMT3A-Mutant Leukemia.” The award supports young investigators who are beginning their independent research careers by providing interim funding as they move toward securing NIH grants. It is made possible through the generous gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation.

Tickets available for play that raises Alzheimer’s awareness

Baylor’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center, African Americans Against Alzheimer’s and GD Productions are teaming up to bring Garrett Davis’ national award-winning stage play, “Forget Me Not,” to Houston. The play focuses on an African American family struggling to accept and manage their father’s illness after ignoring warning signs for the disease. It is meant to not only bring to light the difficult decisions families must make, but also to educate the viewers on the disease. “Forget Me Not” comes to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts for a one-time performance, Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. as part of a national tour. Tickets are free of charge but pre-registration is required. Watch a preview of the play and register for tickets.

Baylor awarded as fit friendly workplace

The American Heart Association has recognized Baylor as a Fit Friendly workplace, awarding the College the Gold Level recognition. The award is given to those who go above and beyond when it comes to their employees’ health. College health programs, led by BCM BeWell, are making a difference in the health of our faculty, staff and students. Many opportunities are available to the Baylor community. Faculty mentors needed for SMART program

The SMART (Summer Medical and Research Training) program needs faculty mentors for clinical activity. If you are interested, submit the electronic clinical mentor commitment form. The SMART Program was developed to provide frontier-level, biomedical summer research projects for undergraduates in a supportive environment with supplemental educational activities. Polls open for faculty and staff of the year awards

The Faculty and Staff of the Year recognition program identifies current faculty and staff whose exceptional contributions to BCM either directly or indirectly advance the College’s mission and values. The nominees all were named as Faculty and Staff of the Quarter during the year. Now it is time to make recommendations from this list on colleagues you think deserve the special recognition for the year. Vote online through June 19.
