Burrage receives research award

Dr. Lindsay Burrage, assistant professor of pediatrics and a clinical geneticist, was honored as a top physician-scientist by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. She was awarded the highly competitive BWF Career Award for Medical Scientists, which provides $700,000 in funding over five years as physicians transition into their full-time careers. It will support her work in studying impaired glycogen metabolism and chronic liver disease in urea cycle disorders.

Smith honored as Champion of Children

Dr. Peggy SmithDr. Peggy Smith, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, received the 2017 Champions of Children Award from the Children's Defense Fund – Texas last week. She was honored at a ceremony May 18 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the Houston Galleria area along with fellow awardee Dr. Susan Tortolero Emery of The University of Texas School of Public Health. Smith was recognized for her leadership in programs that address health disparities and health risks among teens and young adults.

Share medical center stories at upcoming event

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program and the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics is seeking submissions for its storytelling event, "Off Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine." Submissions with the theme "Scrubbed" are being accepted until June 5. Authors of select stories will be invited to a workshop and then to share their stories on June 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the McGovern Medical School, room MSB 2.135. Submit online. Questions? Controlled substances collection June 7

The Office of Environmental Safety will host a DEA controlled substances collection/disposal event Wednesday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ABBR hallway near the Jewish building. Find more information online, including a list of substances that will be accepted.

DocTalk on stroke June 7

DocTalk with Dr. Jeremiah Johnson, assistant professor of neurosurgery, on "Acute Stroke: Risk Factors, Prevention and Current Treatment," is Wednesday, June 7, at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

TMC innovation demo day June 8

To celebrate the culmination of the four-month TMCx accelerator program focused on improving healthcare through digital solutions, 21 health startups will showcase their projects at the TMCx Demo Day June 8 from noon to 7 p.m. at the TMC Innovation Institute on the McGovern Campus, 2450 Holcombe Blvd., suite X. One of the startups is ConsultLink, a mobile platform that manages handoffs, consult and team collaboration in the hospital setting, led by Dr. Alexander Pastuszak, assistant professor of urology. Visit the pet therapy group Faithful Paws and the BCM BeWell program in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor June 8 and 15 from noon to 2 p.m. to interact with four-legged friends and experience stress relief!

Staff member publishes book focused on veterans

Anna Grove, grants manager in the Department of Pediatrics – section of tropical medicine, has published a book called "Faces of Service," a pictorial tribute to veterans, which includes a forward by President George H.W. Bush. The coffee table-sized book includes images of veterans as well as brief narratives. When you purchase online, proceeds support Camp Hope, an outreach of the PTSD Foundation of America.
