Awards and Recognitions

Medical student receives hematology award

BCM's Ryanne Ashley Brown was one of 15 medical students selected for the American Society of Hematology's 2012 Minority Medical Student Award Program, which encourages minority medical students to pursue an interest in hematology research. Award recipients are paired with research and career-development mentors who will help them design and execute a hematology-related research project. The program is offered to medical students from the United States and Canada.

Global grants

BCM's Center for Globalization awarded a new round of grants to support residents and fellows interested in pursuing scholarly activities internationally. The latest recipients and their projects are: Dr. Jason Jarin, medical resident in obstetrics and gynecology, cervical cancer screening and prevention in Malawi; Dr. Katherine J. Weiss, clinical postdoctoral fellow in pediatrics, improving neonatal intensive care units in Monterrey, Mexico; Dr. Natalia Khalaf, first-year resident in internal medicine, conducting colon cancer screenings at the American University of Beirut Medical Center and determining obstacles to cancer prevention and early detection.

Events

Lung Research Day June 21

Dr. Tony EissaFaculty, postdoctoral students and graduate trainees are invited to attend Lung Research Day June 21 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the BioScience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main St. The event will include poster sessions and talks by physicians and researchers from BCM and other Texas Medical Center institutions. It is sponsored by a Gulf Coast Consortia Collaborative Activity Award and directed by Dr. N. Tony Eissa, professor of medicine – pulmonary at BCM. Children's Nutrition Research Center Research Seminars are held Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. in Howland Auditorium at the CNRC, 1100 Bates St. June speakers include:

June 7, Dr. Tom Baranowski, professor of pediatrics – nutrition, "Changes in BMI Category from 6th to 8th Grades"

June 14, Dr. Xinfu Guan, assistant professor of pediatrics – nutrition, "CNS Glucagon-like Peptide 2 in the Regulation of Energy Balance"

June 21, Dr. Steven Abrams, professor of pediatrics – nutrition, "What are the mineral needs of healthy small children?"

June 28, Dr. Kendal Hirschi, professor of pediatrics – nutrition, "Do plants micro-manage our genes?"
