Harrington serves as Medical Honoree of Houston Arthritis Walk

Dr. Melvyn HarringtonDr. Melvyn Harrington, associate professor of orthopedic surgery, will serve as the Medical Honoree for the Houston Arthritis Walk, in association with the Arthritis Foundation, this year. Join Harrington and the Arthritis Foundation on June 1 at the Quillian Center, 10570 Westpark Drive, for a one- or three-mile walk. Find more information online. TMC Orchestra Houston concert

The TMC Orchestra will give a Houston performance of its upcoming concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. "Houston Proud: Celebration of Hope" will be presented locally Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wortham Center's Lillie and Roy Cullen Theater. The concert will feature the Bayou City Chorale, a mixed chorus; and the KIPP SHARP Singers, a group composed of third and fourth graders from the KIPP SHARP College Preparatory School, along with the TMC Orchestra. They will perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and John Rutter's "Mass of the Children" along with other works. Tickets are available at the Wortham Center box office or online at the Bayou City Performing arts website.

Cancer epidemiologist to speak at Duncan Cancer Center seminar series May 14

Dr. Susan GapsturDr. Susan Gapstur, vice president of the Epidemiology Research Program at the American Cancer Society, will be the featured speaker of BCM's Dan L Duncan Cancer Center Seminar Series May 14. Gapstur will lead a discussion titled "Insights in Cancer Epidemiology from the American Cancer Society's Prospective Study." The talk will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. in M112.

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan now accepting applications

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan, a new Houston Independent School District middle school, is accepting applications from rising 6th graders (5th grade students who will enter 6th grade in fall 2013). This school is designed to prepare students for strong academic high school programs, such as the one at DeBakey High School for Health Professions. BCM, which is affiliated with both schools, will guide the health sciences curriculum and provide related teacher professional development. The application deadline is May 16, 2013. Pick up your copy of BCM Family

BCM Family, the college's monthly newsletter for faculty, staff, students and trainees, has been redesigned and is now being offered in both print and online versions. Pick up your copy by the main Cullen entrance, the Jewish Building entrance, the E hallway near Luby's and at the third-floor Coffee Corner.

Back-up care program offers new benefit

The Bright Horizons Back-up Care Advantage program already offers child and elderly care services to BCM employees, and now there is a new benefit for when employees themselves need care, such as when recovering from illness or surgery. Non-medical care for employees is provided by sitter companions, personal care assistants, home health aides or homemakers and can include meal preparation, bathing and grooming and companion or personal care services to support you while you are recuperating. As a BCM employee, you can use up to 10 days of care per employee/per year for just $30 a day.
