Friend, Baylor honored at human resources meeting

Dane FriendDane Friend, vice president of human resources, was one of five finalists for the Chief Human Resources Officer of the Year Award in the nonprofit category from HRO Today. Friend and the other finalists were recognized at the HRO Today Forum held May 1-3 in Chicago. He also was featured in the April issue of the HRO Today Magazine. In addition, Baylor received the Employee Services and Wellness Excellence Award from HRO Today.

Medical student honored for mobile app campaign

Stephen ManningStephen Manning, a student in Baylor’s combined M.D./M.P.H. program with UT School of Public Health, was selected as an Infectious Diseases Society of American Education and Research Foundation 2016 Medical Scholar. Manning helped develop a cell phone text message campaign to encourage patients to discuss HIV testing with their healthcare provider, and the IDSA Medical Scholar program will support this work. Dr. Monisha Arya, assistant professor of medicine, served as his mentor for the project.

Research mentor training May 9

A workshop for faculty interested in shaping or participating in research mentor training at Baylor will be held on Monday, May 9, from 10 to 11: 30 a.m. in room N315. It will be led by Dr. Christine Pfund, co-principal investigator of the National Research Mentoring Network. All faculty are invited to attend. Join Walk to Cure Arthritis May 14

Help support arthritis research and patient care by joining the Baylor team at the Walk to Cure Arthritis – Houston. The walk will be held Saturday, May 14, at Buffalo Bayou Trail/Fish Plaza, 501 Travis Street. The Baylor team, The Walkin’ Warriors, is led by Dr. Melvyn Harrington, associate professor of orthopedic surgery. Join the team or donate to the cause.

Education Awards May 19

The annual Education Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 19, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, where the Fulbright and Jaworski and Robertson Presidential Awards, along with other faculty and trainee awards, will be presented. A reception will follow in Rayzor Lounge.

Baylor St. Luke’s annual research symposium May 24

Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, in conjunction with Baylor and Texas Heart Institute, will present the Ninth Annual Clinical Research Symposium, “Research Today – On the Market Tomorrow: An Update on Clinical Research,” Tuesday, May 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Denton A. Cooley Auditorium at the Texas Heart Institute. Dr. Steven Curley, professor of surgery and chief of surgical oncology at Baylor, will give the keynote address, “From Invasive to Non-Invasive Treatments for Liver Cancers: What a Long and Strange Trip it Has Been.” The symposium also will feature current research and investigational treatment on diseases including diabetes, cystic fibrosis, atrial fibrillation, Parkinson’s and others. Faculty Senate nominations are open

The Faculty Senate Elections Committee is accepting self-nominations now through Tuesday, May 10, for the electoral unit and at-large seats of senators whose terms expire in 2016. The Senate is the primary venue for faculty participation in College governance and strategic planning. Submit your nomination using the online form. Faculty Senate elections will take place May 23-June 8, with faculty first voting for senators to fill open department/center/school/affiliate seats (May 23-30) and then for at-large representatives (June 1-8). Candidates not elected in the first election will be eligible to run for an at-large seat unless they opt out.

BCM BeWell biometric screening information

Biometric screening sessions scheduled for April 19-21 were cancelled due to weather. Screening dates have been added on June 7, June 14 and June 16 from 7 to 11 a.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor to accommodate employees whose appointments were cancelled. Policy updates

Several new or revised policies have recently been published in the College’s Policy and Procedures Manual. A summary of new and updated policies is available. The newly updated policies cover School of Medicine duty hours, academic program approval, flu vaccination and gift acceptance and processing. All Baylor College of Medicine policies are available in the Policy and Procedures Manual.
