Awards and Recognitions
Walker honored by National Academies of Practice
The National Academies of Practice selected James Walker, associate professor of anesthesiology and allied health sciences at BCM, as a distinguished professor of the organization. Walker was given this honor at a gala membership banquet in March. The organization is comprised of distinguished practitioners and scholars from all of the primary health professions.
Surgical Research Day
The 2011 Edmond T. Gonzales Jr. Surgical Research Day sponsored by Texas Children's Hospital department of surgery is Friday, May 6, in the Denton A. Cooley Auditorium at the Texas Heart Institute. BCM faculty, residents and students are invited to attend the event, which will include a talk by Dr. Charles J. H. Stolar, surgeon-in-chief and director of pediatric surgery at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, and presentations from colleagues in the department of surgery at Texas Children's. Health Care Heroes BCM finalists
Several BCM faculty members as well as the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center are finalists for the Houston Business Journal's Health Care Heroes Awards.
Dr. Donald Parsons, assistant professor of pediatrics - hematology/oncology and of molecular and human genetics, is a finalist in the biomedical category, and Dr. Beth Carter, assistant professor of pediatrics - gastroenterology, Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer, associate professor of pediatrics - hematology/oncology, and Dr. Cynthia Peacock, assistant professor of medicine, are finalists in the doctor category.The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at BCM, part of the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, is a finalist in the service philanthropy category.

Braun to head nephrology section
Dr. Michael C. Braun, a nationally recognized expert in pediatric kidney disease, has been named section head of nephrology in the department of pediatrics and chief of nephrology at Texas Children's Hospital. He comes to BCM and Texas Children's from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he served as the chief of nephrology and hypertension in the department of pediatrics.
