Desai gives keynote lecture to medical students

Dr. Samir DesaiDr. Samir Desai, assistant professor of medicine, was invited to deliver the keynote address at the 17th Biennial University of Nebraska Medical Center Residency Symposium, held April 11. He spoke on the importance of students’ developing the right strategies to enhance their chances of a successful residency match. The symposium was attended by about 300 medical student attendees from five medical schools – the University of Nebraska, Creighton University, University of South Dakota, University of Missouri - Kansas City and Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Desai is the author of “Medical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty” as well as co-author of “The Successful Match: 200 Rules to Succeed in the Residency Match.”

Earth Day April 22

Celebrate Earth Day at BCM on Wednesday, April 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Browse a variety of environmental organizations showcasing their earth-friendly products and services. Local food and prizes also will be available. Vendors will be selling locally made deserts, snacks, coffee, juices and more! Earth Day at BCM is hosted by BCM’s Resource Stewardship & Sustainability Program. Professionalism lectures April 30

The Center for Professionalism in Medicine at Baylor will present two talks by Dr. Francis Neelon of Duke University Medical Center on Thursday, April 30. He will speak on “Keeping the Fire Aflame: Sidestepping Burnout in Medicine” at noon in Kleberg Auditorium, geared toward students, with pizza for the first 125 guests. He will then talk on “Curing and Healing: Cornerstones of Professionalism” at 4 p.m. in Alkek M.321 and M.323 with a light reception to follow. Annual Teen Health Clinic tech conference May 5

The Baylor Teen Health Clinic will host its seventh annual Emerging Tech Conference May 5 at the United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive. Learn about the impact of technology campaigns and the advantages of interactive and electronic platforms to promote community health, patient education and communication. Speakers include Patrick Sullivan, developer of AIDSVu, an interactive online map showing HIV cases in the U.S., and Rachel Kachur from the Centers for Disease Control. Register online. Digital medicine course starts May 5

Dr. Bryan Vartabedian, assistant professor of pediatrics, will be one of the instructors of the Rice University online course Medicine in the Digital Age, which starts May 5. The course is intended for a general audience and is relevant to anyone working or interested in the emerging healthcare environment. At the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge to successfully engage with the future of digital medicine. Learn more about the course and enroll online. Baylor’s results in recycling contest

Over the past two months, Baylor competed with more than 390 colleges and universities in the eight-week nationwide RecycleMania competition in which schools are ranked according to how much recycling, trash and food waste they collect. Between Feb. 1 to March 28, competing schools recycled or composted 80.1 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials. Baylor finished No. 43 in the Grand Champion category by recycling more than 47 percent of waste. BCM students, faculty and staff recycled a total of 14.9 pounds of materials per person.
