Awards and Recognitions

Friedman honored by otolaryngology society

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Ellen Friedman, professor of otolaryngology and director of Baylor's Center for Professionalism, received a Triological Citation award at the Triological Society Section Meeting in San Diego earlier this year in appreciation for career mentorship and leadership. The Triological Society is the leading professional organization in the field of otolaryngology.

Gilman earns residency award

Dr. Luke GilmanDr. Luke Gilman, a resident in radiology, was named the 2019 recipient of the Guiberteau Award for Resident Excellence from the Texas Radiological Society Foundation. This award is based on the qualities of scholarship, leadership and citizenship/humanitarianism and was presented last week at the annual Texas Radiological Society Meeting held in Austin.

Lee awarded by Texas Genetics Society

Dr. Brendan LeeDr. Brendan Lee, chair of the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, is the recipient of the Barbara Bowman Distinguished Texas Geneticist Award from the Texas Genetics Society. The award recognizes outstanding geneticists who have made major contributions to the field of genetics and have been affiliated with a Texas institution. Lee will receive the award at the society's 46th annual meeting this weekend in College Station, where he also will give a presentation on his research.

Major and house calls team honored

Dr. Anita MajorThe house calls team in the Department of Medicine Section of Geriatrics was recognized as a National Committee for Quality Assurance-certified Patient-Centered Medical Home. Practices that earn recognition have made a commitment to continuous quality improvement and a patient-centered approach to care. In addition, Dr. Anita Major, assistant professor of medicine – geriatrics, was selected by the Harris Health System for the Ambulatory Care Service Think Innovation Transformation Award, given to physicians in the Harris Health System who work innovatively and collaboratively, resulting in a better patient experience.

April 8: Precision Medicine Grand Rounds

The next talk in the Precision Medicine Grand Rounds series is Monday, April 8, noon, Denton A. Cooley Auditorium at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, 6770 Bertner Ave., on "Using Networks to Understand the Genotype-Phenotype Connection," delivered by Dr. John Quackenbush, professor of and chair of biostatistics at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. CME credit offered.

April 9: Evening with Genetics on hearing loss

The Evenings with Genetics series continues Tuesday, April 9, at the Children's Museum of Houston, 1500 Binz, on "Can You Hear Me Now? Genetic, Environmental and Age-related Hearing Loss," with speakers Dr. Daryl Scott, associate professor of molecular and human genetics, and Dr. Andy Groves, professor of neuroscience. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m.; program at 7 p.m. The event is free but registration required.

April 11: Storytelling event

Off Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine will highlight stories of resilience or resistance from the Baylor and Texas Medical Center communities, Thursday, April 11, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., room M112 at main Baylor. Off Script is part of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program and UT Health's McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics.

April 11-12: Therapeutics of gene regulation symposium

The Therapeutic Innovation Center at Baylor is hosting a symposium to further the understanding of diseases of gene regulation, especially RNA and chromatin biology. The event will include keynote speakers Dr. Robert Darnell of the Rockefeller University and Dr. Nathanael Gray of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and distinguished leaders in gene regulation from academia and industry. Register now for patient safety conference

Baylor's 6th Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is Thursday, April 25, in Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave. This year's conference focuses on the value of teamwork to improve healthcare quality and safety; preparation required for careers in healthcare quality and patient safety; and accreditation and educational compliance in healthcare quality and patient safety. Open to healthcare professionals and trainees. The conference is free but registration is required online by April 21.


College News

Review industry payments to physicians

The Physician Payment Sunshine Act requires applicable manufacturers ("Industry") to report certain payments made to physicians, including fellows. Physicians have until May 15, 2019, to review and dispute Industry payments that will be publicly available on the Open Payments Database on June 30, 2019. Baylor physicians are encouraged to review the payments reported under their name for calendar year 2018 to verify accuracy. For information on how to view and dispute records, see the Physician Sunshine Act page on the Compliance intranet page.

Volunteers needed for West Nile study

Researchers at Baylor are recruiting for a study to determine how long West Nile Virus is present in the body after infection and to learn more about how the virus affects the nervous system and kidneys. Physicians can refer individuals (or the individual's legal representative) with a confirmed or suspected West Nile Virus diagnosis to contact Jeanne Ruff at jruff@bcm.edu or 832-824-0133 to discuss the study or schedule an enrollment visit.

Baylor hosts launch of diabetes campaign

Diabetes risk test

Baylor hosted the launch of a campaign of Harris County Precinct 1, the American Diabetes Association and other local organizations that promotes a quick and easy online assessmment for type 2 diabetes. Look for billboards in English and Spanish featuring Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and go online to take the risk assessment.
