Lam named health policy scholar

Dr. Sandi LamDr. Sandi Lam, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was selected as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/American College of Surgeons Health Policy Scholar for 2015. The scholarship includes attendance at the Leadership Program in Health Policy and Management at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. In addition, she will provide one year of health policy assistance to the AANS/ACS as requested by either organization.

ACS lectureship honors Mattox

Dr. Ken MattoxThe American College of Surgeons has announced the creation of the Kenneth L. Mattox International Lectureship and Scholarship Program, under the direction of the ACS Committee on Trauma. Dr. Mattox, distinguished service professor at Baylor and chief of staff and surgeon-in-chief at Ben Taub Hospital, serves as the second-vice president of the American College of Surgeons.

Patel earns post-residency award

Dr. Akash PatelDr. Akash Patel, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was selected by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Fellowships Committee to receive the 2015-2016 CNR Getch Fellowship Award, which provides $100,000 for advanced training and is granted to a neurosurgeon or fellow engaged in clinical research that promises to significantly impact the field of neurosurgery. The award will be presented at the CNS Annual Meeting in September 2015.

Schaaf appointed committee chair of genetics group

Dr. Christian SchaafDr. Christian Schaaf, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics and investigator at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute of Texas Children’s Hospital, has been named as the new chair of the Education Committee of the American College of Medical Genetics. During his two-year term, Schaaf hopes to develop an online genetics academy, which will offer new and interactive educational tools that can be accessed anywhere and anytime. In addition, he intends to engage students to encourage their interest in the field of medical genetics.

Zoghbi recognized for achievements in developmental psychobiology

Dr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Huda Zoghbi is this year’s recipient of the Mortimer D. Sackler, M.D. Prize for Distinguished Achievement in Developmental Psychobiology, awarded by Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Zoghbi is a professor of molecular and human genetics, pediatrics, neuroscience and neurology at Baylor, as well as director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital. She has pioneered research on Rett syndrome and other rare brain disorders, and has advanced research of autism and adult neurodegenerative diseases. Alexander Lecture April 15

Dr. Laura Roberts, chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, will receive this year’s Joan and Stanford Alexander Award in Psychiatry and deliver a lecture April 15 at 10:30 a.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The award was established in honor of Dr. Stuart Yudofsky, professor and chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor who also was its first recipient. Each year, the award honors a mental health professional who has made significant contributions in research, education and clinical or community service for people suffering from severe and persistent mental illness.

McNair Symposium April 15

The fourth annual McNair Symposium Distinguished Lecture will be held April 15 at 1:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, professor of pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School, will speak on “The Application of Integrative Sequencing for Precision Oncology.” This lecture is open to the public.
