Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Kalpana Kannan, a postdoctoral associate in the department of pathology & immunology, was one of only 15 researchers to receive a 2012 Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award. The award will support her study of novel prognostic markers and therapeutic targets for prostate cancer. The awards promote long-term careers in the field of prostate cancer by providing three-year grants for transformation research focused on prostate cancer treatments to improve patient outcomes.
Support childhood cancer research
Show your support for childhood cancer research at a fun event on March 3 at 2:30 p.m. at Brian O'Neill's Irish Pub in Rice Village. Dr. Rishikesh Chavan, clinical postdoctoral fellow in pediatrics - hematology/oncology, and Michael Flores, ophthalmology IT manager, will shave their heads for a fund-raiser benefiting St. Baldrick's Foundation. Donations can be made online to the BCM team. They are a volunteer-driven charity that supports childhood cancer research grants.
March CNRC seminars
The seminar series at the Children's Nutrition Research Center will feature the following speakers in March:
- March 8, Dr. Steven B. Heymsfield, executive director, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, La., "Evolving Concepts on Adjusting Human Energy Expenditure."
- March 15, Dr. Theresa Nicklas, professor of pediatrics, CNRC, "Did you have Breakfast Today? A New Look into the Benefits of Breakfast."
- March 22, Dr. C. Wayne Smith, professor of pediatrics, CNRC, "CD11c and Adipose Tissue Inflammation."
All talks are from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Howland Auditorium, CNRC, 1100 Bates St. For more information call 713-798-7164.
The Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic is one of the sponsors of the 2012 AIDS Walk Houston, set for March 11. The Teen Clinic will also have a team in the walk. Donate to the Baylor Teen Health Clinic team and to join the team, contact team captain Nettie Johnson at 713-873-3601 or email@example.com. The walk will start at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston, with check-in at 8 a.m. and opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. Walkers will hit the road at 10 a.m.
Bone marrow registration
The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association will be registering individuals for the National Marrow Donor Program March 5-9 from noon to 1 p.m. in the E hallway near Luby's. Each addition to the registry increases the chance that patients in need will be able to find matching donors whose cells will enable their survival. As part of the 2012 Pink Ribbon House, the largest fundraiser solely benefitting research and patient care the Smith Breast Center at BCM, a raffle is being held to win a brand new 2013 Lexus GS 350. Tickets are $50 or three for $100.
