Christner to serve on LCME

Dr. Jennifer ChristnerDr. Jennifer Christner, dean of the School of Medicine, was nominated and approved to serve on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, beginning June 2017. The LCME is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association and is the accrediting body for programs leading to the M.D. degree in the United States. In this role she will participate in site visits and accreditation decision making and attend LCME meetings that focus on updating standards and modifying accreditation procedures.

Mitch honored by kidney patients

Dr. William MitchDr. William Mitch, professor of medicine – nephrology, is a recipient of a 2017 Medal of Excellence Award from the American Association of Kidney Patients. He will be honored March 17 at the Renal Physicians Association meeting in Nashville, Tenn. The award honors healthcare professionals at the forefront of scientific advances in kidney care and who are strong patient advocates.

Rosengart named to surgical society leadership

Dr. Todd RosengartDr. Todd Rosengart, chair and professor of surgery, was elected secretary/treasurer of the Society of Surgical Chairs, a program of the American College of Surgeons. This position will matriculate to president in two years. Society membership includes chairs of all of the U.S. academic departments of surgery and has a membership of approximately 160.

Shivanna to lead pediatric research group

Dr. Binoy ShivannaDr. Binoy Shivanna, assistant professor of pediatrics – section of neonatal-perinatal medicine, was elected president-elect of the Southern Society for Pediatric Research at the society's recent meeting in New Orleans. In this role, he will support the society's mission of furthering pediatric investigation and research providing a forum for its members to meet and present their data for critical review.


Join the E3: diaBEATes program starting March 1

A new program called E3: diaBEATes will launch March 1 at noon at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference room B. The program is open to all benefits-eligible employees who are currently diagnosed with diabetes, at risk for diabetes or seeking to learn more about healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes. Join Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine, and registered dietitian Roberta Anding as they lead weekly seminars to engage, educate and empower you! Benefits-eligible employees can receive free giveaways, complimentary Bod Pod testing and other health screenings and BCM BeWell Vitality points for participation. Questions? Abstracts open for annual quality and safety conference

The abstract submission deadline for the 4th Annual Baylor College of Medicine Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is next Friday, March 3. Abstracts should focus on quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, educational innovations and similar topics, and can be submitted by students, faculty and healthcare providers. Abstracts will be selected through a peer-review process to be presented at the conference, which will be held Wednesday, April 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Onstead Auditorium. Submit abstracts online.

Go Texan Day March 3/Ticket sales

Go Texan Day is Friday, March 3. Western attire is encouraged, within department guidelines. Want to share your Go Texan Day wear? Take a photo of you and your colleagues wearing Western gear and send it to Audrey Marks at Audrey.Marks@bcm.edu by 4 p.m. on Friday to be featured on Baylor's social media channels. Don't forget to include your names and departments. General Admission/barbecue contest tickets and half-price carnival packs to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo can be purchased inside the Office of Communications, located in main Baylor, room 176B, through March 3 at noon. Global HOPE initiative to focus on children’s cancer in Africa

Texas Children's Cancer Center, the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children's Hospital and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation announced a new pediatric cancer initiative, called Global HOPE, at a ceremony in Botswana this week. The Center for Professionalism at Baylor College of Medicine seeks to create, support and sustain a culture of professionalism and integrity among all members of the College's community. Title IX Office focuses on healthy relationships in February

Baylor is committed to ensuring a safe, supportive environment for everyone in our community. In February, Baylor's Title IX Office has been focusing on healthy relationships. Anyone can experience unhealthy or abusive relationship. Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender who experience abusive relationships may face unique barriers that hinder their ability to seek help, such as limited support resources, fear of isolation from their community or the risk of being outed or outing their partner. In addition, men who experience physical violence from their partner or spouse may not report abuse or seek help due to social perceptions of masculinity. Need Help? America Saves Week is Feb. 27 to March 4 and is designed to encourage planning for your personal savings. Consider taking advantage of the resources the Baylor 403(b) Plan has to offer, including tax benefits for saving and protection for your retirement savings. Use Fidelity's Power of Small Amounts tool to learn what a 1 percent increase can do for your savings. In addition, during America Saves Week you can:
- Join Fidelity and register for a curriculum of live, online workshops on a range of topics from budgeting and debt management to college planning and investing.
- Register for TIAA live webinars and access to a wide range of articles, and seminars on a variety of essential financial topics.
