Preventza named journal associate editor

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, association professor of surgery – division of cardiothoracic surgery, was invited to join the editorial board of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery as an associate editor. This is the official journal of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and is one of the leading journals in the field.

Today: Go Texan photo op

Stop by Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a fun rodeo-themed photo-op or take a photo of you and your colleagues wearing western gear and send it to Anna Kiappes by 2 p.m. to be featured on Baylor's social media channels. Be sure to include names and department information with your photo. Feb. 26: Press Ganey chief to speak on burnout and resilience

Dr. Tom Lee, chief medical officer for Press Ganey Associates and professor at Harvard Medical School, will speak on "Burnout, Resilience and Grit: A Positive Path Forward," on Monday, Feb. 26, at 3:30 in Cullen Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Baylor College of Medicine Quality Program and the Center for Professionalism in Medicine.

March 1-2: Duncan Cancer Center Symposium

The 15th annual Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center Symposium is March 1 -2 in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. A poster session and reception kicks off the event March 1 from 4 to 6 p.m., with the second day featuring a full slate of keynote speakers and talks on immunotherapy, cell therapy, vaccines, microenvironment and checkpoint inhibitors and more. March 1: Submit entries for Off Script storytelling event

The next installment of the storytelling event Off Script will focus on changes – both big and small, professional and personal – and how they affect emotional and physical health. The Baylor community, including faculty, students, trainees and staff, can submit a story with this theme by March 1, and select entrants will be invited to the workshop to share their stories at the March 29 Off Script event at Baylor. March: 2: Lecture on competency in health professions

Dr. Kevin Eva, associate director and senior scientist at the University of British Columbia, will speak from 9 to 10 a.m. in room M112 at main Baylor on "What Learning to Diagnose Pneumonia Can Teach Us about Judging Competence in the Health Professions." Eva is a leader in the U.S. and Canada on health professions education. His talk is sponsored by the School of Medicine.

March 3: Coselli leads Baylor team at Marfan Walk

Join Dr. Joseph Coselli's team at the third annual Marfan Walk for Victory, March 3 at noon at Discovery Green. The event, chaired by Coselli, vice chair of surgery, raises money and awareness for Marfan syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects the heart, eyes, bones and spine. Coselli is a leading expert on Marfan syndrome. Join or donate.

Register early for primary care conference

The annual Pri-Med Southwest primary care conference will be held May 16-18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The conference is geared toward physicians, nurses and physician assistants, as well as trainees, and sessions will cover all aspects of primary care with the goal of providing the latest knowledge and tools to provide high-quality care. Baylor is the academic sponsor of the conference with Drs. Michael Fordis and Stephen Greenberg serving as course directors and other Baylor physicians presenting sessions. College News

Annual compliance training

This year's required Annual Compliance Training covers fraud, waste and abuse and will run from Feb. 19 through March 30. All BCM employees and learners must complete the training through AMP by March 30 or be subject to sanctions. Awareness of the College's new and significantly revised policies is a requisite part of the training. See the new or revised policies approved in 2017.

CMS updates medical students' note policy

Effective March 3, teaching physicians may use medical students’ notes for billing purposes provided the teaching physician verifies in the medical record all medical student documentation or findings and personally performs or re-performs the exam and medical decision making. Residents may not use medical students' documentation of history of present illness, exam or medical decision making. Learn more about this policy and see a sample physician statement. Questions? Nominations open for Love Award

Nominations are being accepted for the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. Candidates will be considered for their qualities of professionalism in patient care, clinical research and/or education as well as humanism. The nominee must be a full-time or part-time faculty or voluntary faculty physician with a BCM appointment, be in good standing and have contributed to the institution for five or more years. Nominations may be made by department chairs and center directors. Nominate by March 9 by email to Maria Lopez. Learn more.

Applications are currently being accepted for Clinical Science Training Program

The Clinical Scientist Training Program currently is accepting applications for the session starting in August. The program trains junior faculty, sub-specialty fellows and senior residents for careers in academic research. It awards Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in clinical research through the Baylor Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a one-year Certificate of Added Qualification in clinical investigation. HR news: Form 1095 information

If you were a benefits eligible employee during 2017, you will receive Form 1095 from Baylor, which provides information about the healthcare coverage that you had or were offered during 2017. Study volunteers needed

Drug to increase immune response study: Healthy volunteers are needed for a study to test a new drug to increase the body's natural immune response, which can provide stronger protection against infections. Eligible volunteers must be male, between the ages of 18 to 40 years and must not have had the flu vaccine within the last 30 days or the tetanus-diphtheria vaccine in the last 5 years. The study will include three clinic visits over a six-week period at the Jamail Specialty Care Center and telephone follow-ups, standard blood work-up and a physical and psychiatric exam. Chikungunya vaccine study: Researchers at the BCM Vaccine Research Center are looking for volunteers to participate in a study evaluating a chikungunya vaccine. Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 45 who are in good general health are needed for this study. Your time will be compensated for participating.
