Awards and Recognitions

Dunham earns neurology teaching award

Dr. Richard DunhamDr. Richard Dunham, assistant professor of neurology, received the 2019 AB Baker Teacher Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology and will be recognized at the Academy's annual meeting in May. The award recognizes contributions to neurologic education. Dunham also is the associate clerkship director of the Maxine Mesinger Multiple Sclerosis Clinic.

Ismail named to academic medicine council

Dr. Nadia IsmailDr. Nadia Ismail, associate professor of medicine, has been elected to the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine Council of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. This group represents third-year clerkship directors, course directors, administrators and coordinators, clinical preceptors and other faculty and staff involved in undergraduate medical education.

PA conference features Baylor faculty

Several faculty members and students in the School of Health Professions' Physician Assistant Program attended the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants Annual CME Conference in Houston earlier this month. Faculty presenters included Kathleen Thompson, "Pediatric Asthma: An Overview of Presentation and Management Strategies"; Stephanie Desandro, "The Acute Abdomen"; and Elizabeth Elliot, "Child Passenger Safety Workshop." In addition, several recent PA Program graduates were poster winners at the conference.

March 1: Cancer awareness and symposium

-Wear blue on Friday, March 1, in support of colorectal cancer awareness. Share your photos for inclusion on Baylor's social media accounts by emailing anna.kiappes@bcm.edu.
-Also on March 1, the 16th Annual Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center Symposium will be held in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including poster presentations and talks by Baylor and other experts focused on the latest in cancer research. Learn more.

March 2: Physician Health & Wellness Exchange

The Texas Medical Association presents the Physician Health and Wellness Exchange, Saturday, March 2, 8:15 a.m. - 5 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Learn to manage your stress, fatigue and work-life balance and earn CME credits; open to medical students, residents and physicians and other members of the academic medicine workforce. Register online.

Houston walk for Marfan syndrome

Dr. Joseph Coselli, professor of surgery, and Dr. Shaine Morris, assistant professor of pediatrics - cardiology, are the medical chairs of the Marfan Foundation's 2019 Walk for Victory, March 2, noon to 3 p.m. at Discovery Green. This one-mile walk raises money and awareness for Marfan syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects the heart, eyes, bones and spine. Fun activities include face painting, carnival games, a photo booth and more! Join Coselli’s Crusaders or Texas Children's Champions for Health.

March 4: Submit entries for Off Script storytelling event

The next installment of the storytelling event Off Script will focus on the theme "Resilience or Resistance?" and how both approaches can impact us. The Baylor community, including faculty, students, trainees and staff, can submit a story with this theme by March 4, and select entrants will be invited to the workshop to share their stories at the April 11 Off Script event at Baylor. Call for abstracts: medicine research symposium

Submit abstracts for the 2019 Department of Medicine Housestaff Research Symposia. All interns, residents, fellows and medical and graduate students, along with full-time faculty, in the Department of Medicine or whose mentor is in the department, are eligible to submit in the categories of clinical medicine, clinical research, quality improvement/patient safety and basic research. Poster judging and keynote lectures will be held April 4, and an oral symposium of select posters is June 6. Abstracts due by March 5; email Haider Salloomi for more information and to obtain submission forms.

March 5-6: Health equity grand rounds

Dr. Feranmi Okanlami, professor and director of medical student programs in the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion at University of Michigan School of Medicine, will deliver two grand rounds lectures next week:
-Family and Community Medicine Grand Rounds, "Cultural and Linguistic Competency in a Primary Care Setting: Needs, Barriers and Solutions," Tuesday, March 5, 6 to 7 p.m., 3701 Kirby Drive, Suite 600
-Health Equity Grand Rounds, "Disabusing Disabilities," noon, Wednesday, March 6, in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor

Life Science Entrepreneurship course

The Life Science Entrepreneurship course will be held March 11– April 17, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Rice University. The course focuses on the role of physicians, scientists, MBAs and engineers in high-tech startup companies. Leaders from Baylor and other TMC institutions will serve as guest speakers, and the course is led by Dr. Jack Gill, a successful entrepreneur and venture capitalist. Volunteers needed for study on smoking

Participants are being sought for a study of an investigational new drug to change smoking behaviors. Eligible participants must have smoked cigarettes for more than five years, be between the ages of 28 to 55 and in good health, make 12 clinic visits over a nine-week period and be willing to take an experimental medication. Volunteers will receive a no-cost physical and psychiatric exam and standard blood workup at the beginning and end of the study and may be compensated up to $800.
