Chiang receives fellowship

Dr. David ChiangDr. David Chiang, an M.D./Ph.D. trainee in the Medical Scientist Training Program, was awarded the European Society of Cardiology Basic Research Fellowship for 2015. The fellowship, which is given to only one candidate a year, will allow him to spend up to one year in the laboratory of Dr. Albert Heck at Utrecht University in Utrecht, The Netherlands. There, he will be trained in state-of-the-art proteomics methods in order to apply them to his research on cardiac diseases in the laboratory of Dr. Xander Wehrens, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Baylor. In addition, Chiang will present this work at the 2016 meeting of the European Society of Cardiology in Rome.

LeMaire named journal editor

Dr. Scott LeMaireDr. Scott LeMaire, professor of surgery and vice chair for research in the department of surgery, was named editor of the Journal of Surgical Research, a role he will assume in 2016. Founded in 1961, the journal includes reports of clinical investigations and fundamental research related to surgical management, geared to a broad range of surgeons and surgical researchers. It is the official journal of the Association for Academic Surgery. LeMaire previously served on the journal’s editorial board for six years.

Go Texan Day/ticket sales

Show your love for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Go Texan Day, Friday, Feb. 27. Employees may wear western attire, including jeans, within department guidelines. Also, general admission tickets (does not include concert admission), barbecue cook-off admission tickets and discounted carnival packets are on sale in the Office of Communications, Main Baylor, Suite 176B, until Friday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m.

Event benefitting CMV research

Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, along with the nonprofit organization Maddie’s Mission, are sponsors of the first annual 5K / 10K event benefitting CMV research on Saturday, March 7, at Cinco Ranch High School. It will include a 5K and 10K timed race and a 5K and 1 mile family run/walk. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the least known but most common viral cause of permanent disabilities in newborns. Register online.

Join or donate to MS150

BCM will have an official team riding in the 2015 MS150 bike event, which raises money for multiple sclerosis treatment and research. To join, contact team captain Jesse Gavin at jgavin@bcm.edu. Management training courses available

Management training classes are available for staff and faculty.
- Managing to the Mission (Staff Only)
This course is designed for staff members in supervisory or management roles. This two-day program covers leadership assessment, team building, communication skills, effective meeting presentations, delegation, best practices at BCM and an overview of key policies. Register online.
- Leading Through Influence (Faculty Only)
This one-day course is designed to empower faculty with techniques on hiring, conflict resolution and employee morale. Register online.
